Roots of Bamboo Culture.

In 2014 in Koh Phangan I started building small bamboo domes with palm leaf roofs. My first buildings were a playhouse for my son and tea house for my friend and future business partner .

Even though the bamboo buildings were very simple in their construction, the sensations that were chewed by those who were in the bamboo houses were deep and pleasant. This inspired me to make a big bamboo dome house.

One of the first people to notice my bamboo construction was the family. They became our first sponsors, with the support of , a few months later, the first domed bamboo teahouse was opened at the Pyramid Yoga Center, with which the history of “Bamboo Culture” began.

“Bamboo Culture” is more than a construction business, for me, work on each bamboo project is always a mystery at the intersection of art and shamanism.

In the winter of 2019, a key meeting with .loci_ took place in the teahouse, which determined the vector of development and the point of application of Bamboo Culture's efforts for several years.

Now the project implemented in collaboration with the "Zero Waste Center" is almost 1000 sq.m. cozy bamboo spaces along the cliffs of Had Yao Beach.

In four years, the “Bamboo Culture” team has built more than 15 objects, arranged the processing and supply of bamboo, assembled and trained a large team of builders - they have created a large community around them with reverence for bamboo.

We have accumulated experience and want to share this knowledge!

In April 2023 on Koh Phangan, Thailand, we will organize an 11 day BAMBOO CULTURE CAMP - one of the most dynamic events this year.

In a few days we will build a domed house and really pump over the topic of designing and building with bamboo.

We will be assisted by experienced craftsmen from Burma and Thailand, you will be amazed at how fast buildings can be erected.

Each of the participants will have the opportunity to participate with a comfortable intensity: from an observer to full immersion in the construction process.

Welcome to Bamboo Culture Camp 2023!

The Golden Ratio - what is the secret?

No doubt, one of the best aspects of architecture is the ability to make constructions so variable – so different in terms of dimensions, configuration, and style – and yet so alike at their essence.

It’s not really significant, who designs a structure, it is constructed from a draft. No matter what the building looks like once it’s finished, it’s still assembled from a set of natural materials. Regardless of what the building’s eventual purpose is, the golden ratio was most likely used to calculate its proportions.

This ratio – 1:1.61 - occurs over and over again in nature. It’s in everything - from the shape of the Earth, the structure of the sun, and even the proportions of the human body.

People have incorporated it into everything from geometry to artwork. With such different applications, it should come as a surprise that this ratio is rooted in architecture’s fundamental assumptions.

Let’s talk about it!
Have you heard about the Golden Ratio?

Is Bamboo Invasive?

No! Bamboo is actually not about invasiveness. It is a misunderstood plant and a native to every continent, except Europe.
All in all, for a species to be truly invasive in an ecosystem, it has to be able to spread quickly over great distances.
Bamboo is only expansive on a small localized scale because viable spreading only occurs from the root system. Thus, if you control the root system, you control bamboo. You don’t have to worry about the elements, animals, or insects spreading bamboo.
So, what are the main characteristics of this plant?
• Bamboo has abundant but extremely irregular flowering, typically on 70+ year cycles for temperate bamboos.
• Seed set is usually quite poor, germination only occurs in exact conditions.
• Seed dormancy in the wild is approximately 1,5 weeks.
• Most seeds are eaten like rice, a source of carbohydrates.
• Cane cuttings of temperate bamboos do not root and rhizome divisions need exact conditions.
• Bamboo has rapid growth and a very long life cycle.
• Bamboo is killed with continual defoliation.
Have you heard anything about the invasiveness of bamboo? Tell us in the comments!

Can Bamboo Be a Bridge to a More Sustainable Future?

Definitely! Bamboo, one of the world's oldest building materials, is the raw material for some of mankind's newest.

Aside from the low cost and maintenance of bamboo, environmentalists have linked the plant to climate change mitigation, which would earn companies increased income through carbon credits.

This highly productive plant is efficient in sequestering carbon, taking in twice as much carbon dioxide as trees and meeting all the necessary criteria for countries’ sustainable development goals.

Moreover, bamboo grows incredibly fast, which makes it easy for farmers to harvest and market the plant. It can be sold commercially to construct furniture, roofing, fencing, floor tiles, walls, ceiling and many other building materials.

We hope that bamboo is that plant, which leads our society to a more sustainable future, do you?

My name is Anton. I was born in Siberia. Since 2014 I have been living in Thailand, on the island of Phangan. Since 2018, I have been doing eco-friendly construction from bamboo. Interest in this business arose as a hobby and gradually grew into the Work of Life. This is my inspiration!

In 2020, we are opened the Bamboo Culture Design Center. We design and build ECO bamboo structures: houses, art objects, villas, furniture, interior items. We use the principles and technologies of sustainable architecture.

Each project for us is a "child", created with love and care. The main idea that we are promoting is to be closer to nature, to live in organic and beautiful houses.

What Does It Cost to Build a Bamboo House?

Nowadays, more and more people wish to rely on something special when building their own house.

This is the million dollar question everybody likes to have a clean cut answer too. But keep in mind: building with bamboo requires resources!

When it comes to bamboo housing, we have two so-called extremes.

Firstly, there is a story, in which a designer managed to build a bamboo house that costs only $68 and takes 1 day to build. Obviously, the space is very limited and the house itself can’t actually be seen as a home. But multiple modules can be added next to each other and connected, providing more rooms and space.

On the other side, a legit bamboo house will come with a various cost depending on what materials and building techniques you use. For instance, a low-budget, two-story house can be built for only $8,000, but there are bamboo houses that go as high as $170,000, because they are mostly made of prime-quality bamboo.
