One of the most common questions after excimer laser surgery is when vision will fully stabilize. It is normal to experience blurriness, fluctuating vision, or mild stinging in the first few hours after the procedure. This is a natural part of the eye’s healing process.

For most patients, vision noticeably improves within the first few days; however, the final clarity can vary from person to person.
The recovery period depends on several factors:
• The laser technique used
• The rate at which the corneal surface heals
• Postoperative eye drop regimen
• Regularity of follow-up examinations

The goal is not only to achieve clear vision quickly but also to ensure long-term healthy and comfortable eyesight.

I would also like to explain the stinging sensation in the eye.
One of the most important causes of stinging in the eye, and one of the reasons we most frequently encounter under outpatient clinic conditions, is dry eye. Dry eye can be seen in many people. In particular, working environments, dusty settings, increased use of computers and tablets, and driving for long periods with sustained attention are factors that increase dry eye.

Patients usually describe their symptoms by saying, “My eye is stinging,” “I feel as if a handful of sand has been thrown into my eye,” or “I get sleepy very quickly and feel a heaviness in my eye.”

We see this more frequently especially in women who have entered menopause. As hormone levels decrease, the incidence of dry eye increases. We also very commonly observe dry eye in connective tissue diseases and rheumatologic conditions. These patients most often present with complaints of stinging.

Of course, there may be other causes as well. Having undergone surgery can be one of them. Laser surgery or cataract surgery, pterygium surgery, or a foreign body entering the eye can also manifest itself as stinging.

However, the most common and predominant cause we encounter is dry eye.

Although it may seem like a minor discomfort, recurring eye fatigue can pave the way for serious vision problems over time.

To prevent eye fatigue:
• Balance work and screen time

Under-eye bags may form at an earlier age in some people. The most common reason for this is genetic predisposition. Apart from this, environmental factors can also cause them to develop more quickly.
Among the main factors are alcohol and cigarette use, and conditions such as lack of sleep. In addition, if a person has a systemic disease, such as thyroid disease or kidney disease, or if they have an allergy, we can also observe the formation of under-eye bags at a younger age.

Glaucoma, that is, ocular hypertension, is generally seen at older ages. By older ages, we mean after the age of 35–40. This is the most commonly seen type and is called chronic glaucoma. It usually progresses silently. The patient does not notice that their eye pressure is high. After a certain period of time, vision begins to deteriorate. When the patient visits a doctor with complaints of visual impairment, it is determined during the examination that the intraocular pressure is high and that the patient has glaucoma.
Therefore, even if there are no complaints, it is beneficial to have regular eye examinations, especially after the age of 40. If high eye pressure is present, it can be detected during the examination.
Apart from this, there are other forms of ocular hypertension. These are relatively less common. Some of them occur with a sudden and significant rise in eye pressure, during which eye pain develops. The patient consults a physician due to severe pain. The course of these types is not silent, and their diagnosis is easier.

Excimer laser is not applied the same way for everyone!

Before the operation, detailed corneal mapping, eye thickness, and pupil analysis are performed to create a personalized treatment plan. This ensures both safety and optimal visual sharpness.

If we have cataracts, what can we do to prevent them from progressing?
The most important factor that increases cataracts is sunlight. When exposed to sunlight for long periods or when looking at the sun with the naked eye for an extended time, cataract progression accelerates.
Another important factor is smoking. Since smoking affects all our blood vessels, it also impacts the nourishment of the eye and accelerates the progression of cataracts.
Our third factor is healthy nutrition and regular exercise. If we want to keep our body young, our eyes — which are a part of our body — also stay young. Healthy eating and exercise are important factors in preventing cataracts from progressing.
There are also some medications that accelerate cataracts. These include corticosteroid eye drops, ointments, and pills. They accelerate cataract progression. However, they should only be used when necessary and should not be used randomly or without medical supervision.
