🦶📏 What Is Flat Feet? Symptoms and Treatment Process
Flat feet occur when the arch of the foot is lowered or entirely absent. Early detection during childhood is crucial, as in some cases it may resolve naturally with age, while in others it may persist and require intervention.

🔍 Types of Flat Feet:
🔸 Flexible (Physiological) Flat Feet:
Common in children. The arch appears flattened when standing but reappears when the child stands on tiptoe. Typically painless and does not require treatment.
🔸 Rigid (Pathological) Flat Feet:
The arch is absent in all positions. It may cause pain, fatigue, and difficulty standing for long periods. It can result from genetic factors, ligament laxity, or bone abnormalities.

⚠️ Common Symptoms:
● Inward tilting of the heels
● Pain in the feet and legs
● Fatigue during physical activity
● Uneven wear on the inner sides of shoes
● Postural imbalances

👣 How Is It Diagnosed?
🩺 Physical examination
🧍 Analysis of standing posture and walking
🦶 Footprint assessment (pedobarography)
🩻 Imaging, such as X-ray or MRI, if necessary

🩰 Treatment Options:
👟 Use of orthotic insoles
🧘 Stretching and physiotherapy
👣 Supportive footwear
🔁 Surgical intervention in persistent, painful cases

💬 Note: Not all cases of flat feet require treatment, but proper evaluation by an orthopaedic specialist is essential.

🪑👧🦴 How Do Sitting Positions Affect Bone Development in Children?

Sitting is one of the most common postures children adopt throughout the day. However, the way they sit can have a direct impact on spinal health and bone development.

❗️Certain sitting positions, in particular, warrant close attention:

🔸 W-Sitting:
When children sit with their knees bent and feet splayed outwards in a “W” shape, it may restrict hip rotation and, over time, lead to developmental issues in the hips, knees, and ankles.

🔸 Side-Leaning or Twisted Positions:
Prolonged sitting on one side or in asymmetrical postures can result in postural problems such as spinal curvature (scoliosis).

🔸 Upright, Supported Sitting:
Postures where the back is supported, feet rest flat on the floor, and hips and knees form a 90-degree angle are the most beneficial for bone and muscle development.

📈 Tips to Support Healthy Bone Development:
✅ Encourage children to sit in a variety of positions
✅ Promote active sitting (such as cross-legged on a mat)
✅ Avoid prolonged static sitting
✅ Use ergonomically designed desks and chairs

🧠 Remember: Bone development is shaped not just by nutrition, but also by postural awareness.

Posture disorder in children is not always a permanent problem!

🧒🏻 Some postural problems in childhood can be observed especially in lower sitting positions.

📌 If these postures are flexible and the child can maintain the correct posture voluntarily, it is usually a habit, not a deformity.

⚠️ However, if these positions continue for a long time; spine development, back health and respiratory functions can be negatively affected.

🏃🏻‍♀️ Regular sports and correct posture habits play a major role in maintaining posture.

🦵Meniscus Tears in Children: What Parents Should Know

Meniscus tears don’t only affect adults – active children can suffer from them too. ⚽🏀 These injuries often occur following sudden twisting movements, falls, or trauma, particularly in sporty kids.

🔍 Symptoms to look out for:
▫️Pain and swelling in the knee
▫️A feeling of locking or catching
▫️Restricted movement

📌 Early diagnosis is essential not only to relieve pain but also to protect the long-term health of the knee. Delayed treatment may result in permanent joint damage.
🩺 Diagnosis is made through a physical examination and, if needed, an MRI scan.

Treatment may include rest, physiotherapy, or in some cases, arthroscopic surgery.
If your child has unexplained knee pain, be sure to consult an orthopaedic specialist!

🦴 Why Is Hip Ultrasound Important in Newborns?

Hip ultrasound is a critical step in the early diagnosis of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH).

👶 This painless and radiation-free screening, performed within the first 4–6 weeks, enables the early detection of any potential structural issues.

⏱️ Early diagnosis = Easy treatment without surgery
Remember, healthy development begins with timely action. 🩺

👶 Flat Feet in Children: When to Worry? 👣

Flat feet in children are common and often not a cause for concern. Flexible flat feet are normal in toddlers. If there is no structural problem with the foot, it is usually physiologic and resolves spontaneously in most children.

🍀 Flexible flat feet occur with loss of arch in the foot. Until the age of 3-4 years, this condition can be supported with anatomical children’s shoes. After 4 years of age, special insoles are recommended as the child’s activities increase.

🏃‍♂️ After 7-8 years of age, the use of insoles is important because flat feet can progress after this age. If appropriate insoles are not used, the risk of the problem worsening and the need for surgical intervention increases.

🔍 Structural problems may require early intervention; sometimes plaster treatment or surgery may be required, but these are rare.

🏋️‍♀️ In flexible flat feet, treatment success is high with physiotherapy, exercises that strengthen the foot muscles and kinesiotape. With these supports, surgery is often not necessary.

🦶 If you notice flat feet in your child, consulting an orthopedic specialist would be the right step. Early intervention is important for healthy steps.

👣 Not All Flat Feet Require Surgery!

Flat feet are common in children who are just starting to walk and are often due to a physiological, flexible structure. This condition may be more prominent in children with familial ligament laxity, but it usually resolves spontaneously with age.

🔍 So when is surgery necessary?

If there is a congenital abnormality in bone structure

In case of special diagnoses such as vertical talus, tarsal coalition

If accompanied by neurological diseases such as cerebral palsy

Or if you have flat feet that persist until puberty and cause pain

In such cases, surgical treatment may be considered.

🧘‍♂️ However, the likelihood of needing surgery in a generally healthy child is very low.

If you say “My child has flat feet, what should I do?”, don’t worry. Let’s evaluate together. Not all flat feet require surgery!
