MALATYA. Farmers in the higher growing areas are reporting the first frost damage from their plantations, while snowfall has prevented the worst in the lower areas. The end of Ramadan is slowing down trade.
✅ Damage assessments are still pending
Like the vineyards in Manisa, the apricot plantations in Malatya were also hit by the night frosts at the end of last week, as the meteorological institute had already predicted. The snowfall in the second half of the week prevented the worst, and the fact that the fruit has not yet set is also an advantage.
✅ Nevertheless, frost damage occurred in the higher growing regions, especially in Akçadağ, Darende, Doğanşehir and Hekimhan. The affected growers have been asked to apply for a damage assessment so that a clearer picture of the extent of the damage should emerge in the coming days. Temperatures are currently quite favourable with 4-10°C at night and up to 26°C during the day.
Prices remain stable
The market is currently quiet, as most companies close their plants in the last week of Ramadan and will resume work after the end of the fasting month on 2 April. Prices therefore remain stable at the level of recent weeks. The commodity prices for dried apricots, no 2 remain at TRY 140-150/kg, while export prices are hovering around USD 5,200/mt FOB Mersin.
The devaluation of the Turkish lira could lead to price changes in the coming weeks, but exporters are still waiting for the time being. Jumbo grades are almost sold out, while all other sizes are still available in sufficient quantities.
Exports still very good
✅ Exports continue to be excellent. Last week, Turkey exported 1,727 mt of dried apricots and apricot products, compared to 1,285 mt in the same week last year. Since the start of the season, a total of 60,632 mt have been shipped overseas, a good 10,000 mt more than the 50,010 mt in the same period last year.
