Another very productive day yesterday serving at a voluntary Health Fair for senior citizens hosted by the Barrackpore Improvement Committee and held at the Barrackpore West Secondary School. It was amazing!!!
We offered free screening to the seniors, did a short lecture on Cancer Awareness and had a blast while doing it.
Additionally, 2 of our students volunteered to serve as part of our vision to create well-rounded laboratory professionals with a heart for the public. They performed exceptionally well.
Thanks to the Medical Scientific Educational Institute team for their commitment to education and service to others.
Thanks to Ms AnnMarie and the BIC for the invitation, and thanks to Ms Sharon Somar, our lovely counselor and friend who is always ready to make an impact and serve others.

Another splendid opportunity to be part of the Point Fortin East Secondary School (PFESS) Career Day today. Students were introduced to the laboratory industry and had loads of fun viewing insects, leaves and blood cells while seeing some of the common laboratory tools/equipment in use.
As usual the looks on their faces were enough for us.

We were privileged yesterday to do a presentation for the Ministry of Education South Eastern Education District( S.E.E.D) at the Barrackpore West Secondary School. The target audience was a lovely group of Guidance Officers and Counselors. The topic dealt with Mental Health and Physical Well-being and it fused laboratory science with overall wellness.
Thanks to Sis Denise Tyson and her team for initiating the event.

Happy to have gotten the opportunity today to serve voluntarily at a Science Fair held at the Cowen Hamilton Secondary School. We got the interesting task to help show how subjects such as Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics are all involved in the Medical laboratory field. From Microscopy, Urine and Glucose testing, to Hot plates and magnetism, Miscible/Immiscible liquids and Phlebotomy, our team had a blast as we helped build interest in the wonderful world of Science. The Medical Scientific Educational Institute added greater depth to the entire day's events. Always thrilled to share to the young ones.

There are many different types of bacteria that can cause disease in humans. An interesting thing about them is that they often have unique characteristics and growth patterns that help us in the medical laboratory identify them. Here we see the Beta Hemolytic Staphylococcus aureus bacteria that grows with a zone of clearing around its colonies as red cells are destroyed by this particular microbe. The second one shows Klebsiella pneumoniae with its characteristic moist, mucoid, large and glistening colonies. Lovely but dangerous indeed!
