HEALTH HEROES 2020; YEAR OF THE NURSE AND MIDWIFE
Mrs. Afifah Abdul-Qadir
With 17 years under her belt as a Registered Nurse, Afifah Abdul-Qadir is driven and motivated by her team and her patients. She explains, "The ability to change lives through patient education; to share knowledge and skills with junior nurses who show interest in perfecting the art and science of Nursing." Her initial interest in the profession started when she wanted an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of individuals needing care. Also, Nurse Abdul-Qadir wanted to improve on her social standing and be among "a most noble profession."
The best thing about a Nurse, she says "It's all about caring and seeing patients recover from their condition or at least show significant improvement as a result of the care and education shared with them." For her, her most memorable experience was "the day a mother came up to me frantic with her baby convulsing in her arms due to a high fever. I had to reassure her while attending to the child [the mother] was scared to death."
Nurse Afifah Adbul-Qadir advises those wishing to enter the profession, "Consider [your] support circle because nursing is a very demanding career. Your spouse/ significant other must play a supportive role. If it what you like and will enjoy doing, follow your dreams."
