𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝐇𝐔𝐀𝐏 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐖𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝

Starting from Taiwan, we traveled 12,300 kilometers to Boston. Over the seven days of the Winter Conference, we witnessed countless moments of exchange that crossed even greater distances.

In each event and meal time, we met and got closer to delegates from different Asian universities and from Harvard, forming meaningful friendships along the way.

Through the Potluck and Talent Show, we experienced the diversity of cuisines and performing arts from different regions, and felt the most sincere forms of cultural exchange.

During chats and HUAP X, we listened to delegates from various countries introduce the issues facing their hometowns, gaining insight into the stories they have lived and the realities they are currently confronting. Though we come from vastly different lands and historical backgrounds, we often found common ground in these shared experiences — facing similar challenges, resonating with one another, and sparking thoughtful discussions.

As we explored Harvard and took part in several Boston city tours, we not only came to know this city more deeply, but also gained broader perspectives toward the world. Through multiple Speaker Events — including talks, Q&A sessions, and discussions — diverse viewpoints shaped by different national and cultural backgrounds came together, expanding our horizons and the expectations for future.

Over these seven days, the conference brought us rich knowledge, meaningful reflection, unforgettable experiences, and friendships that were difficult to say goodbye to.

Our sincere thanks to HUAP Harvard for organizing the Winter Conference, and to all the delegates from around the world who joined us. It was truly a pleasure to meet you, learn from one another, and look forward to the day we meet again.

Special thanks to our wonderful hosts who so thoughtfully welcomed and took care of us, the Taiwan Delegates — Sophie, Minh, Ella, Danji, Bill, Ethan, Cassidy, Jacky, and Kaella. We are so happy that we grew closer during the Winter Conference and created many joyful memories together ❤️

Walk into a cafe with white walls, wooden tables, and potted plants. Does it feel familiar? Perhaps too familiar?

In his new book, " : How Algorithms Flattened Culture," New Yorker writer Kyle Chayka asks a crucial question: Are we creating content, or is content creating us?

📱 The Algorithmic Flattener
The "Instagram aesthetic" of the 2010s wasn't just a trend; it was a byproduct of algorithmic optimization. As platforms prioritize engagement, culture begins to look the same everywhere. Chayka calls this "Filterworld"—a cultural landscape that is polished on the surface but increasingly hollow inside.

🧠 Redefining "Brainrot"
Through a digital detox experiment, Chayka discovered that stepping away from feeds makes the world slower, yet more real. isn't about broken minds; it’s about the collective loss of our capacity for deep thought. We have become experts at training algorithms to show us what we think we want, while losing touch with what we truly want.

🛡️ Relearning Slowness
How do we resist?

Chayka suggests a return to human curation and "slow media":

· Rebuild Attention: Swap the endless scroll of TikTok/Reels for documentaries, books, or in-depth reporting.
· Support Human Judgment: Trust editors and curators over automated recommendation systems.
Algorithmic Literacy: Recognize how your feed is designed to shape you.

🗣️ Discussion Are "our" preferences still our own? To what extent have they been shaped by what we see online? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below! 👇
