Dr. Liu Yong-Liang
She came to consult us after experiencing recurrent miscarriages. She wondered whether the miscarriages might be related to her husband’s heavy workload or genetic factors from either side of the family.
I suggested that the couple undergo carrier screening for genetic diseases, cancer-related genetic testing, general health screening, and tests to investigate the causes of recurrent miscarriage. This would help clarify the situation, since it is not necessarily caused by one specific person.
Before her husband was assigned to work in Japan, they completed all the examinations. The results showed that the couple did not carry the same recessive genetic diseases, so it would not increase the difficulty of future IVF treatment. However, her test results revealed that her ovarian reserve was lower than expected, showing signs of premature ovarian insufficiency.
Later, as both of them relocated to Japan for work, we carefully planned the timing for them to return to Taiwan for IVF treatment.
During the first IVF cycle, possibly due to her weaker ovarian function, the eggs retrieved were not of ideal quality. In the end, only one biopsied embryo was chromosomally normal, though its morphology was not particularly strong.
Still, she remained determined and said, “I want to try again.”
While in Japan, she received intravenous NMN therapy at a local clinic (in Taiwan, NMN is only available as an oral supplement). After resting for one month, she started her second IVF cycle.
For the second attempt, we also adjusted her medication protocol. This time, six blastocysts were frozen and biopsied, and three showed good morphology. Compared with the first cycle, both the number and quality of blastocysts improved significantly.
After the egg retrieval, she returned to Japan. I also helped prepare medical certificates required by her local insurance, as commercial insurance in Japan provides subsidies for IVF treatments.
Later, I left Taichung. Her embryo transfer was then performed with the assistance of our director, and she successfully became pregnant. I was truly happy for her.
She later shared that her husband’s work had been transferred to the United States, and they would be moving there together. Recently, she delivered her baby safely in the United States, and I’m grateful that they were willing to share this joyful news with me.
