Whatโ€™s one thing you wish someone told you about your first period?

We asked our community, and the responses reminded us how many of us had to figure things out on our own.

For many girls, 'the talk' was:
โ€“ Too brief
โ€“ Too uncomfortable
โ€“ Or never happened

So we relied on friends, the internet, or quiet observation.

Swipe through to read what others wish they had known.

Then share yours in the comments. Your experience could help someone else feel less alone.

Because period education should not be built on silence.

PMS vs PMDD, know the difference. ๐Ÿง

PMS = uncomfortable but manageable.
PMDD = severe and life-disrupting.

PMDD is a diagnosable condition that affects a smaller percentage of people, but its impact can be intense, including depression, anxiety, rage, exhaustion, and difficulty functioning.

The biggest difference? Severity.

If your symptoms stop you from working, studying, or maintaining relationships every month, it may not be โ€œjust PMS.โ€

PMDD is not your fault. Itโ€™s a hormonal sensitivity condition, and treatment exists.

If this sounds familiar, consider speaking with a doctor and tracking your symptoms.

๐Ÿ’œ You deserve to be taken seriously.
๐Ÿ’œ You deserve care.

Say 'menstruation,' not 'monthly visitor.' ๐Ÿ’ฌ

Euphemisms like 'Aunt Flo,' 'shark week,' or 'that time of month' might feel familiar, but they perpetuate shame.

Your period isnโ€™t a visitor. Itโ€™s a normal biological process. Clear language = dignity. ๐Ÿ’œ

โœ… 'I have my period.'
โœ… 'Iโ€™m menstruating.'
โœ… 'My cycle is 28 days.'

Normalize the language. Break the stigma. Start with yourself.

Whatโ€™s the worst euphemism youโ€™ve heard?

Your period gives health signals. Most changes are normal, but some are your body asking for help.

Watch out for:
โ€ข Very heavy bleeding
โ€ข Pain that stops daily life
โ€ข Irregular or missing periods
โ€ข Unusual discharge or strong odor
โ€ข Periods that suddenly stop
These signs can point to treatable conditions. Severe pain and heavy bleeding are not something you have to live with.
You know your body, trust it.

Your period is not a mystery. ๐ŸŒธ
It's a monthly health signal. Understanding it is not a luxury; it's basic knowledge.
But many of us were never taught.
Not in school. Not at home. Nowhere.

We learned to hide periods, not understand them. To feel shame, not ask questions.

'And that's not our fault.'
A menstrual cycle tells you when your body is resting, preparing, or releasing.

It's information. It's your body communicating with you.

Not knowing what that means? That's not shameful. That's an education, and we can fill it.

You deserve clear, respectful information. Education without judgment. Knowledge that empowers.

Learning starts with safe, clear information.

This is the foundation behind Siku Zangu, and the foundation we're building here, in this community.

You deserve to understand your body.

What's one thing you wish someone had taught you about your cycle? ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿ’œ Save this if you needed to hear it
