Thank you to teacher Moris who led yesterday morning's community yoga class! Today we really enjoyed a Hatha yoga practice and it was lovely to see some new faces in the class 🤗

Moris is originally from Pangani, Tanga and has recently come over to spend some time in Nungwi. Our Co-Founder met Moris through who trained to become a yoga teacher with . Earlier this year Rio kindly arranged for Sia to lead a class for who offer free/donation based classes to the citizens of Bagamoyo on mainland Tanzania.

Moris' values align with our goal of sharing the benefits of yoga to everyone and making the practice accessible for all 🧡 We're really excited about what the future holds for us all and we're so happy to welcome Moris to the community 💪😊

Community Yoga 🧡 We have a spacious room to practice in thanks to us partnering up with The Panje Project (check out the amazing work they do!) 💫 It's not all about the physical side of the practice though, it's also about what happens after the class... the sitting together and sharing of stories whilst we drink something warm and have a small bite to eat. Taking the time to get to know one another, creating new friendships, listening to different points of view and building new support systems. That's when community is created 🧡

Community Yoga! We moved and flowed and worked up a sweat... then we sat and enjoyed some uji, fresh fruit and visheti together 😋

We would like to say a big thank you to for allowing us to use their space once a week. If you would like to donate and help us with community yoga, the funds will also go to The Panje Project too, a wonderful organisation who provide water safety education on the island through their Aquatic Survival Project. They also do great work through their Survival Swimming and Youth Training programmes.

Alternatively we're also taking donations of yoga mats, blocks and other props too 🤗

In the meantime we look forward to seeing Nungwi's yoga community grow week by week 🤩

Karibuni nyote! 🧡💫

Did you know Jipende means "love yourself" in Swahili?

Self-love is an ocean and your heart is a vessel. Make it full, and any excess will spill over into the lives of the people you hold dear. But you must come first.” —Beau Taplin

We love a nourishing Yin class! ☯️ So many of us live very active (yang) lifestyles which don't leave us with much time to slow down and connect to our mind and body. If we don't take regular moments to pause over time this can drain us physically, mentally, and emotionally. Yin yoga, as well as restorative yoga, can really help us cultivate balance and bring a feeling of wholeness.

Benefits of a regular Yin yoga practice:
~ Calms and balances the mind and body
~ Help sreduce stress and anxiety
~Long hold times of a yin practice offers the chance to sit with our emotions
~ Help the body restore range of motion
~ Balances the internal organs and improves the flow of chi or prana
~ The stillness of a yin practice primes us for meditation.

What do you love about Yin?

Meet Sia 👋

Sia is the co-founder of Jipende Zanzibar and it's her mission to make sure her yoga practice gives back to the community in a positive way.

Originally from the UK, Zanzibar has been a part of Sia's life since 2013 and it's now a place that she calls home.

With Zanzibar being an island that relies heavily on tourism, yoga spaces on the island are predominantly filled with able-bodied Western clients that pay prices for classes which are out of reach for many people who are from the local area.

As a registered teacher who is certified not only in Ashtanga and Vinyasa Flow but also Inclusive Yoga, Yoga for Addictions and Trauma-Informed Yoga, Sia started Jipende with the aim to provide outreach holistic services to the local community here in Zanzibar.

When Sia isn't teaching yoga, she's usually dealing with the admin side of Jipende, attending meetings with the government or creating nourishing retreats on Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania.

A total beach lover at heart, Sia usually spends her free time catching rays whilst wandering down the beach or taking a dip in the ocean. She's a creative soul who loves to paint, learn new languages and watch live bands. You can find out more by checking out her IG page .

Hey! Mambo vipi 👋 We're Jipende based in northern Zanzibar and we're here to make wellbeing more accessible to as many people as possible 🙌

Our offerings currently include yoga, breathwork and meditation. To ensure that everyone can take part, we have a sliding-scale pricing system for our classes which we believe can be used as a tool for social justice.

So many people want to access practices like yoga but don't have the financial means to take part. Jipende is here to change that by offering accessible pricing which falls under the following categories: Supporter, Sustainer and Community. Our hope is that you feel empowered to choose honestly what aligns the most with your financial resource, so that those who would otherwise be unable to afford to join can take part in our offerings too 🙌
