Artesans ResQ EU

Artesans ResQ EU NGO (non-governmental organization) that transport critical patients of all ages from any point in Ukraine and provide critical care transfer trainings.

Artesans-ResQ has been active in Ukraine for two years now and specialises in the intensive care transport of injured and sick people. The project covers three main areas:
• Coordinative support
• Transportmission
• Trainingsmission
In this project, we are collaborating with the WHO, the Ukrainian Ministry of Health and the European Commission.Artesans-ResQ provides its own intensive care transport capacities. Regular outpatient clinics and large-capacity intensive care transporters in the form of buses are used, which can transport up to five ventilated patients at the same time. Our vehicles are in use around the clock and have already transferred 350 patients over a total distance of around 38,000 km this year. We are called to the most complex medical cases.

In February, we focused on the most difficult clinical cases. It was an intense month, with a focus on critical patients and extremely complex burn evacuations, including the transport of victims with injuries covering 90–95% of their body surface area.

In February, the team covered 35,411 km and completed 25 medical missions, 96% of which required intensive care at ICU levels 2 and 3. These missions included:

• 4 children and 2 newborns in critical condition successfully transported;

• 11 patients with severe burns evacuated to specialized centers;

• 19 long-distance transports;

• 9 targeted evacuations;

• 5 missions carried out in cooperation with the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

Our team continues to focus on highly complex burn evacuations, where speed, accuracy, and coordination are critical.

Your support is what allows us to be there for patients when they need us most.

In January, the Artesans-ResQ Ukraine team transported 23 seriously injured patients, 10 of them abroad for further treatment. Many of these patients had burns and multiple injuries, with burns covering up to 95% of their bodies in some cases, making transportation extremely difficult and critically important.

Our previous posts have shown how training increases teams' readiness for such challenges and how practical case studies help hone the skills needed to save patients' lives.

Our mission goes far beyond a single operation or training session. We work systematically to ensure that medical teams are prepared for any challenge — from transporting seriously injured patients in Ukraine to international evacuations. We don't just transport patients — we train those who will save even more lives in the future.

That is why today we are reaching out to everyone who can support us. If you want to join our common cause and support the training of teams, you can make a donation:

Transporting seriously injured patients is one of the most difficult and responsible tasks in modern medicine. This is especially true for patients with burns and multiple injuries: in some cases, burns can cover up to 95% of the body surface, which is a serious medical challenge and requires teams with a high level of training and clinical expertise.

Each such patient requires full “resuscitation on wheels” during transport. The transportation process requires mobile intensive monitoring and treatment for dozens of hours.

During such transport, the team must:

▪️ protect the airways and control ventilation;
▪️ collect and analyze blood gases and adjust ventilation parameters;
▪️ continuously monitor hemodynamics and fluid volume in the body using ultrasound;
▪️ ensure accurate sedation and adequate pain relief;
▪️ maintain optimal temperature and other vital signs.

In addition to clinical challenges, there are also logistical challenges: mobile resuscitation must be deployed in an ambulance, ready for any emergency situation on the route for more than 10 hours. Team coordination, continuity of intensive care, and rapid decision-making under stressful conditions are all critical to patient survival.

In January of this year alone, our team transported 23 seriously injured patients, 10 of whom were transported abroad for further treatment.
These figures underscore the scale of the challenge and highlight the importance of regular training and education for medical teams.

The Artesans-ResQ Ukraine team conducted a series of specialized training sessions on transporting critical patients in Kropyvnytskyi and Kyiv.

The training was attended by 56 doctors and paramedics who work with seriously injured and critically ill patients on a daily basis. Twenty interns, future course instructors who will help spread knowledge throughout Ukraine, joined the program separately.

The goal of the training is to increase the readiness of medical teams for extremely difficult transports of seriously injured patients, many of whom have burns and multiple traumas. In some cases, patients have burns covering up to 95% of their body surface, which makes their condition critical and requires maximum clinical attention.

During transport, the medical team must provide full “resuscitation on wheels”:
▪️ airway protection and ventilation control;
▪️ blood gas sampling and analysis and correction of ventilation parameters;
▪️ control of hemodynamics and fluid volume using ultrasound;
▪️ accurate sedation and adequate pain relief;
▪️ maintenance of temperature and vital signs.

The training also covers logistical and team aspects: organizing mobile resuscitation in an ambulance, coordinating the team's work during long journeys, and ensuring the continuity of intensive care.

These trainings help to improve the efficiency of teams and ensure patient safety during transport both within Ukraine and abroad.

We sincerely thank all participants for their enthusiasm and willingness to learn, as well as our partners — ДЗ "УНПЦ ЕМД та МК МОЗ України" and the World Health Organization (WHO) World Health Organization Ukraine — for their support and trust. Thanks to this knowledge and training, we save the lives of seriously injured patients every day.

Four years of MEDEVAC in Ukraine: a true lifeline in the chain of care for the wounded & ill.

From day one, we’ve stood shoulder-to-shoulder with our Ukrainian colleagues — learning tough lessons, embracing failures, and relentlessly improving the system.

What can Europe take from this hard-won experience? How do we forge a truly unified European MEDEVAC capability — resilient, interoperable, and ready for any crisis?

We brought our insights to an exceptional gathering led by EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid & European Commission , uniting World Health Organization (WHO), EU Member States, civil protection authorities, and military experts to co-create a shared plan and pool our strengths for saving lives.

Experience → Action. Lives saved together.

Since the beginning of 2026, we have focused on complex, targeted, and long-distance transportations. January was the first confirmation of this vector — a month of high workload, where the key indicator was the clinical complexity of our missions.

In January, our team covered more than 39 500 km, successfully completing 38 medical evacuations, including:

9 pediatric and 4 neonatal patients

14 patients with severe burns (45–80%)

23 long-distance transports (over 500 km), including 9 cross-border missions in cooperation with the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the Center for Emergency Medical Care and Disaster Medicine of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine

One of the fastest cross-border evacuations of a child was carried out — a little more than 48 hours passed from the moment of injury to arrival at a specialized center

In 92% of cases, patients required intensive care at the ICU 2–3 level (including the use of vasopressor support and mechanical ventilation)

We would like to thank our team for their professional and coordinated work in the highly complex conditions of each mission.

Special thanks to our partners — the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the Center for Emergency Medical Care and Disaster Medicine of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine — for their support and joint implementation of the transportations.

75% of her body surface area is covered with burns. Every minute counts.

This happened on January 2 in Kyiv. A 16-year-old girl suffered numerous burns after falling into a pit of hot water.

At Kyiv City Children's Clinical Hospital №1 condition was stabilized, she was connected to a ventilator, and initial wound treatment and anti-shock measures were performed. That same evening, consultations began with children's burn centers in Germany and Switzerland, and an international medical evacuation was initiated within Medevac Ukraine.

On the morning of January 3, the clinic in Cologne confirmed its readiness to accept the patient, and the Artesans-ResQ Ukraine team, together with the Center for Emergency Medical Care and Disaster Medicine of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, began preparations for transportation.

On January 4, at 4:45 a.m., the ambulance left Kyiv, and at 2:00 p.m., the girl was already waiting for the plane in Rzeszów. At around 6:00 p.m., the patient was delivered to Cologne in critical but stable condition and is being prepared for surgery.

Each stage of this complex case was made possible thanks to the dedication and professionalism of the large Artesans-ResQ Ukraine team, as well as the support of our partners:

In the first days after a serious injury, every hour counts.
The team’s decisions during this short window of time can determine whether a patient survives as well as the duration and extent of the patient’s recovery.

In less than a week, we implemented a complex, multi-stage process of targeted medical evacuation for four patients with severe burns and inhalation injuries who were in Kharkiv.

In the shortest possible time, our teams:
• transported three patients along the route Kharkiv → Kyiv → Vinnytsia — directly to a specialized burn center;
• transported one patient along the route Kharkiv → Kyiv.

In parallel with stabilization and treatment, we were already preparing for the next stage. After the necessary interventions were performed in Ukraine to stabilize the patients, all four were combined into a single logistics chain and transferred to air ambulances outside of Ukraine for international medical evacuation and continued specialized treatment abroad.

The second stage required separate decisions and resources.
Three patients were transported simultaneously in one specialized ambulance bus, and another patient was transported in a separate ambulance. Throughout the entire route, the patients were under constant medical supervision and received the necessary respiratory and medication support.

This was not just a journey of thousands of kilometers.
For these people, it was their only chance in the first critical days to quickly get to a place where the necessary expertise and experience were available.

We sincerely thank the doctors at the stabilization points and Ukrainian hospitals, the team at the burn center in Vinnytsia, the partners of the Medevac program, the Ukrainian National Medical Center and the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the Cherkasy and Lviv centers of the International Medical Center, as well as the medics, drivers, and coordinators who ensured the continuity of each stage.

This is how targeted medical evacuation works when every hour counts.

The Artesans-ResQ Ukraine team received an ambulance from the United Kingdom.

On December 13, our fleet was expanded with another ambulance equipped with the BabyPod system, which allows for the safe transport of infants in serious condition.

Along with the vehicle, we received important equipment and consumables that are used daily during evacuations and inter-hospital transfers.

First and foremost, we would like to thank for their support and donation — it is thanks to you that this ambulance is now ready to save lives.

We are sincerely grateful to Christian Thwaites for his involvement, coordination, and assistance in making this happen.
