🐾💉 Protect Animals. Protect People. Prevent Zoonotic Diseases. Zoonotic diseases — infections transmitted between animals and humans — can seriously affect families, farmers, and entire communities. The good news? Many of them are preventable through vaccination.

🐶 Pets

Rabies vaccination for dogs (and cats, where recommended) is essential and often mandatory. In risk areas, leptospirosis vaccination for dogs is also strongly advised. Protecting pets means protecting your family.

🐄 Livestock

Vaccinating cattle, sheep, and goats against brucellosis and, in endemic regions, anthrax, helps safeguard farmers, rural communities, and the food supply. Healthy animals reduce economic losses and public health risks.

👩‍⚕️ People at Risk

Rabies vaccination (pre-exposure for high-risk professionals and post-exposure after animal bites) is a life-saving measure.

According to the World Health Organization, rabies remains one of the deadliest zoonotic diseases — yet it is fully preventable with timely vaccination.

🌍 A strong vaccination program supports the One Health approach: one world, one health, shared responsibility.

Let’s invest in prevention today for safer communities tomorrow.

🐾🐖 Protect Your Animals – Protect Your Community

Healthy pets and livestock are essential for safe communities and sustainable farming. Regular vaccination, daily observation, and early reaction to warning signs can prevent dangerous animal diseases from spreading.

🔍 What should owners pay attention to?
Watch for alarm symptoms such as:

- loss of appetite or sudden weight loss
- fever, weakness, or unusual behavior
- breathing difficulties, coughing, or nasal discharge
- diarrhea, vomiting, or unexplained deaths in animals

🦠 Why is this important?
Diseases such as African swine fever, avian influenza, leptospirosis, and toxoplasmosis can spread quickly among animals and, in some cases, pose risks to humans. Early detection and proper veterinary care help limit outbreaks and protect both livelihoods and public health.

✅ What you can do:

- Vaccinate pets and livestock according to veterinary recommendations
- Keep animals in clean, safe conditions
- Avoid contact with sick or wild animals
- Immediately inform a veterinarian or local authorities if you notice suspicious symptoms

💬 Awareness and responsibility start with each owner. Together, we can reduce risks and keep our animals—and communities—safe.

🐾 The Hidden Risk Cats Carry Across Borders: Toxoplasmosis Monitoring in Ukraine & Romania 🌍

Cats are more than beloved companions—they’re also the primary carriers of toxoplasmosis, a parasitic infection that can pose serious risks to pregnant women, people with weakened immunity, and young animals.
Free-roaming cats can shed the parasite through their f***s, contaminating soil, water, and even vegetables in our gardens 🐱⚠️

🌐 Why the Border Region Matters
Cats don’t recognize borders—and neither does toxoplasmosis. In Ukrainian and Romanian villages and farms, stray and outdoor cats move freely, creating an invisible chain of transmission on both sides of the border.
That’s why cross-border monitoring is essential: what happens in one backyard can affect a neighboring community across the river.

💬 What people are saying:
🗨️ “We never realized that a common infection could travel so easily across villages and borders.”
🗨️ “This monitoring helps us protect both animals and vulnerable people in our community.”

👀 Who should care?
🐾 Animal rescuers and shelter volunteers
🐱 Cat owners with outdoor pets
🤰 Pregnant women and families in rural areas
🚜 Small farms where cats live near livestock

✅ Prevention starts with awareness.
Let’s keep our cats—and our communities—healthy 💙🐾

🐭 The Invisible Threat on Both Sides of the Border

Mice and rats are more than just pests that spoil feed. They can carry leptospirosis — a dangerous infection that spreads from animals to humans.

Rodents shed bacteria through their urine, contaminating water, feed, and bedding. From there, the infection reaches cattle, horses, pigs, sheep — and people.

A Cross-Border Problem — A Shared Response 🇺🇦🤝🇷🇴

The Ukrainian–Romanian border region shares rivers and land, but also shared risks. Rodents don’t recognize borders, and infections can easily spread between farms on both sides of the Danube and Prut.
That’s why cross-border monitoring has started, including testing rodents for leptospirosis.

Who should pay attention?

✔️ Farms near rivers, lakes, or humid areas
✔️ Storage facilities with rodent activity
✔️ Farms facing unexplained abortions, livestock deaths, or fever

🛑 What should you do?
✔️ Poisoning mice alone is not enough
✔️ You must know if infection is already spreading

✅ Check today — protect your livestock tomorrow

Avian Influenza: Early Diagnosis Saves Farms

The threat is real: Avian influenza poses a serious danger to the poultry industry and the population

Why is modern laboratory diagnostics the "gold standard"?

⏱️Detects the virus BEFORE clinical signs appear
⚡Highly sensitive and fast
🧬Differentiates dangerous virus subtypes
📍Provides time to localize infection hotspots

What we do within the project:
We conduct poultry monitoring using modern laboratory diagnostic methods while adhering to all biosecurity protocols 🧑‍🔬🛡️

Timely diagnosis:

🔷Prevents spread between farms
🔷Reduces economic losses
🔷Protects the region's epizootic welfare

Cross-border context: 🌐

Avian influenza knows no borders. Migratory birds carry the virus across countries.
Joint efforts of Ukraine and Romania in our project are critical for early outbreak detection and coordination of quarantine measures 🤝🇺🇦🇷🇴

Timely diagnosis is the key to controlling avian influenza!

🐖 African Swine Fever: Why Feed Testing Can Save Your Farm

A reality that affects us all: ASF has no cure, no vaccine, and losses for Ukrainian farms in 2026 could be catastrophic ⚠️.

But there’s one risk factor often overlooked – feed 🌾. Ordinary feed can become a mechanical carrier of the virus, especially if it comes from affected zones or is stored improperly. The ASF virus is extremely resilient and can survive in feed for months.

What farmers in risk zones should do:
1️⃣ Regularly test feed in laboratories
2️⃣ Purchase feed only from verified suppliers
3️⃣ Store feed isolated from animals
4️⃣ At the slightest suspicion – immediately send for testing

Important to understand:
Laboratory feed control is not bureaucracy, but a real biosecurity tool 🛡️ that protects your business and the region’s food security 🍽️.

ASF knows no borders 🌍. The virus spreads easily between countries through contaminated feed, equipment, and wild fauna 🐗. Joint efforts of Ukraine and Romania 🇺🇦🇷🇴 in our project are critical for containing the epidemic 🤝.

🌍 Strengthening Disease Monitoring Across Borders! 🐾

Today, on December 26, experts, practitioners, and local authorities gathered in Izmail to discuss monitoring and prevention of animal and zoonotic diseases, including rabies, African swine fever, leptospirosis, toxoplasmosis, feline and canine distemper, and avian influenza.

Participants shared observations on symptoms, transmission risks, and challenges in monitoring and reporting. Rabies and African swine fever were highlighted for their high lethality and persistence in animals and the environment. Difficulties with stray animals, wildlife management, and gaps in systematic surveillance were discussed in detail.

The group also emphasized the urgent need to raise awareness among the general public, not just pet and livestock owners. Educational materials should be adapted for all target groups, with special focus on children and students, to improve understanding of disease risks and prevention.

The results of the workshop will be used to develop an informational sheet, which will be provided to veterinary clinics, promoted through social media, and presented during informational seminars to reach a wider audience.

This workshop is a key step toward safer communities, healthier animals, and stronger cross-border cooperation.

Diseases know no administrative borders. In sensitive regions such as the Danube Delta, cross-border cooperation becomes essential to protect animal health, population and the environment.

Through the project „SMS-RO-UA: Development of Screening and Monitoring Systems for Emerging Diseases and Prevention of Cross-Border Epidemics in the Current Context” – ROUA00136, DSVSA Tulcea Direcția Sanitară Veterinară și pentru Siguranța Alimentelor Tulcea is actively collaborating with partners in Ukraine to develop a common system for screening and monitoring emerging diseases.

What synergies have been created through this partnership?
• harmonization of sample collection and analysis methodologies;
• exchange of relevant epidemiological data across borders;
• application of the same diagnostic and biosafety standards;
• strengthening of institutional capacity for rapid response;
• scientific cooperation based on trust and shared expertise.

This integrated approach allows for a clearer understanding of the dynamics of diseases such as African Swine Fever, Avian Influenza, West Nile Virus Infection, Toxoplasmosis or Leptospirosis, in a common ecosystem of Romania and Ukraine.

The project demonstrates that effective epidemic prevention begins with cooperation, information exchange and coordinated actions across borders.
