RECOVERY STORY

My Name is Ongom Raphael, I was born on the 1.3.1971, in Orukumo Village, Kathebakume Parish, Nyakwac Sub County, Abim District.

I started drinking alcohol and cigarette smoking way back in 1994 when I started earning some small money as a secondary school teacher. I began as a normal drinker but progressed gradually to the point that I became addicted. I became powerless over these substances. My personal and family life coupled with my work all became affected. I even lost my job. As my situation was getting off hand, my brothers Fr. Ayepa Thomas and Alphonse became concerned about my alcoholism.

They intervened by taking me to a rehabilitation center, and this was PACTA UGANDA GULU Recovery Connections on the 31.10.2021 where my story changed.

While in the rehab, for the first three weeks, I experienced serious withdrawal syndromes and craving for ci******es especially. With the lectures, group therapies, one on one counseling I managed to handle my cravings and my story changed.

Life amazed me when I celebrated the festive season sober while at the center for the first time. It was all beautiful. I thought life is good if lived sober.

To maintain my sobriety one day at a time, I am getting involved in some productive activities like, farming, business etc. Constant AA meetings with fellows can help strengthen our sobriety. And we should have the conviction not to drink or smoke one day and a time.
