Somero Uganda

Somero Uganda Empowering children and young women from vulnerable communities through education, health and skills development. http://www.somero-uganda.org

Somero Uganda aims at empowering children and young people to lead a self-determined life. Its main instruments of empowerment are education, skills development, and sound health. Why girls and young women? Ugandan girls and young women living in the slums belong to the most vulnerable groups of society. They often have been denied education due to the unfriendly schools environment and family responsibilities. Therefore they have to earn their living in the informal service sector, where they are at risk of being exposed to sexual exploitation and violence. Somero Uganda regards itself as a key actor in implementing some of the government’s proposed guidelines on socio-economic and health interventions for girls and young women by linking national concerns to local interventions built on capacities and resources of youth themselves. A strong peer-to-peer network is the backbone of Somero. Vision

Our vision is a Uganda where children and young women live a sustainable life: Our objectives include;

• To create a safe learning environment for vulnerable children & young women to access meaningful quality education. (Contributing to SDG 4.)
• Develop skills and positive attitude among children and young women towards employment for decent work and enterprise development. (Contributing SDG 4 and 8)
• To increase, demand, access and utilization of quality, affordable and appropriate health care services for Children and young women. (SDG 3)
• Develop skills needed for sustainable community development, understanding global issues, promotion of peace and non-violence and appreciation of cultural diversity. (Contributing to SDG 4.7)

Earlier this week, a team led by the Project Manager and the SBCC Officer conducted a courtesy visit to Kamuli District.

The purpose was to observe social norms community dialogue sessions across Mpakitonyi, Nagwenyi, and Nagamuli parishes in Bulopa Subcounty.

These sessions engage influential community members to address and shift negative social norms affecting the decisions of young fathers, ultimately aiming to foster safer and more peaceful homes.

Today, in the Kimumbasa zone of Bwaise Parish, Kawempe Division, we concluded the 16 Days of Activism. The event featured a community engagement that included netball, football, dialogues, and awareness games.

This successful initiative increased youth knowledge and collective action against all forms of gender-based violence (including digital abuse) among adolescents in Kawempe, thus collectively creating a safer space for both men and women in the community.

On the occasion of our 20th graduation ceremony, the Busia centre celebrated the graduation of 60 young women. They successfully completed a 10-month employable skills training program in Fashion and Design and Hairdressing and Cosmetology.

The beneficiaries included 14 former victims of child trafficking, 18 former victims of child labor (who were withdrawn from the Tiira gold mines), and 14 young mother, former victims of domestic violence and others

The training equipped them with sustainable employable skills and financial literacy knowledge, which we believe will sustainably improve their livelihoods and standards of living.
