Postpartum Affirmations w/ a TWIST✨

Save this post if you are newly postpartum or soon to be, mama! Use them to empower you to take care of yourself, protect your peace, and confidently place boundaries during this huge life shift season🫶

I still remember sitting in a chair in my living room 3 days postpartum pleading in my head for my grandparents to go home. Not because I didn’t love them or I didn’t want to spend time with them but because my entire bottom was in EXCRUCIATING pain. At the time, I had no idea that I should have set a boundary for visitors so I could ensure I was allowing my body to rest and heal.

Setting a limit on visitors doesn’t make us “bad daughters, sisters, granddaughters, nieces.. etc” it provides kindness to OUR body and our baby.. both of which are going through huge transitions.

Normal postpartum things you may not know✨

1. It’s common for the V***a and perineum to be swollen after giving birth, making it uncomfortable to p*e -using a peri-bottle while p*eing can help neutralize the acidity from the urine 🚽

2. Hemorrhoids are common during pregnancy/postpartum. If you get hemorrhoids things like an herbal sitz soak, dermaplast (blue cap), witch hazel, and epsom salt baths can be soothing 🍑

3. After pains are the cramping of the uterus after birth 💥

4. Most people will experience discharge (lochia) for 3-6 weeks. This can vary greatly depending on activity level 🏃🏻‍♀️
~Even if baby was birthed via cesarean section, mom will still experience lochia~

5. Postpartum DOES NOT mean postpartum depression. Postpartum IS the time after birth. Baby blues can be expected but should begin to resolve in about 2 weeks. If past the 2 week window, it may be helpful to reach out to your care team for support.

We can see the immense strength of a woman when she is birthing; a part of her she may have never knew existed. Be confident in her abilities, call them out to her. Be calm for her, be her ground. Praise her as she finds ways to cope through all the intense sensations she’s experiencing. When we are calm it’s easier to cope and we are coping well, we are more confident and the cycle continues.

Many babies have been born with the support of Birthwise Doula since my last “welcome baby” post! Life has been busy and my social media presence has definitely hit the back burner. To all of my clients who haven’t seen a post for their birth, please don’t think it’s bc your birth wasn’t important to me. All of the births I attend hold a super special place in my heart and in my birthwork journey. This mama/doula is just juggling a lot at the moment. I never want to post just to post.. I like to have heart and meaning behind them. I’m hoping with the new year beginning, I can gain some time, confidence and love for posting again. Cheers to 2024 ✨

Happy birthday baby! (A few days late)

Have you ever heard me say how much I love what I do? Because, I LOVE WHAT I DO! It can be hard, physically and emotionally.. but getting to support and witness a birth like this one makes it all worth it— and excited to do it again!

This momma had her work cut out for her. She labored so beautifully, quietly in sync with her husband. Their love for one another needed no words. They held one another, forehead to forehead, while she slowly breathed through each wave. Her strength never wavered, even when her was on the verge of being rocked.

The fact that a mother’s body knows how to birth their baby was shown time and time again. She would move instinctively and deliberately, without words or direction. When a woman is left to labor undisturbed, she can achieve what God designed us to do. I’m spending my morning grateful for all that God has done for us and for being given the honor to witness such beautiful moments in a family’s life✨🩷

Sure have protocol, policies and procedures.. which is great if they are in place to benefit the birthing mother…

But -usually- they are in place to protect the hospital and the staff, not the and baby. Am I shaming nurses and doctors? Absolutely not. Usually they’re just doing their job, but sometimes in trying to implement a hospital protocol they are hindering and even on a extreme level can cause harm to the mother.

As someone just in to have their baby and doesn’t have medical background or knowledge, it’s normal and common for us to just want to trust and go along with what the medical staff says.. but my point here is that WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO SAY NO TO ANY RULE, PROTOCOL, POLICY, PROCEDURE that the hospital says we ~need~ to do. You are not required by law to follow any of that.

I’m not implying that we go in and spitefully deny and ignore hospital staff’s advice and care. This is to inform mother’s that they are ultimately in control of their .. they can consent or deny anything they wish to. This is why education is extremely important when it comes to our pregnancy and birth.
