Here is a good immune enhancing diet.

Breakfast – sautéed fresh veggie mix, two organically fed free ranged eggs, two large cups green tea.
Tea recipe: Numi loose leaf organic tea steeped 4 minutes with turmeric, cinnamon, broccoli sprouts and a splash of elderberry juice. I usually drink three or four large cups a day.

Lunch: small portion of leftovers from yesterday’s dinner.

Dinner: Usually wild caught sockeye salmon or chicken with sautéed veggie mix. Sometimes a ¼ cup of quinoa or cauliflower pasta.
Usually served with organic spinach salad covered with fresh ground flaxseed, h**pseed, walnuts and lots of organic berries.

Desert – several times/week
1. One inch square 80% dark chocolate if my sweet tooth is overwhelming me.
2. Snack mix – I keep a refrigerated homemade mix of 75% almond butter raw or homemade plus 25% organic peanut butter with lots of walnuts, almonds, pecans, h**p seed, freshly ground flax seed. Need decaf tea (recipe above) to wash that down.

Each meal is 2/3 vegetables. Try to drink lots of water all day. Pretty boring but works for me. Minimize carbohydrates other than vegetables and low sugar fruit Remember FOOD IS EITHER MEDICINE OR POISON – IT’S OUR CHOICE. STRENGTHEN YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM.

GOT TIME ON YOUR HANDS #4 – BE PART OF THE SOLUTION

Why is the leaf-cutter ant population doing so well? They work together. Next to humans, leafcutter ants form the largest most complex animal societies on Earth. They are doing a better job than we are.

GOT TIME ON YOUR HANDS #3-DEALING WITH ORTHOPEDIC PAIN “ON YOUR OWN”

It’s obviously best to remain as physically isolated as possible until we get more information about this pandemic crisis. You don’t need to be running to a clinic or doctor’s office for most orthopedic pain. But what about that severe back pain, swollen knee or stiff shoulder. What do you tell grandma when she is crying about her painful knee?

First, understand that pain “hurts more” in people who are anxious and under stress. That includes just about everybody who is paying too much attention to the news media. Perhaps some advice on dealing with anxiety or depression will also help them deal with their orthopedic pain. Read Blanda Orthopedics’ two previous blogs for some ideas.

Second, when should someone leave their physical distancing to visit a clinic or physician for orthopedic pain? True non-traumatic orthopedic emergencies are rare but the two most common are infection (increasing pain, swelling, fever, redness,), and fractures or dislocations (trauma that prevents you from bearing weight on that area). These need to be evaluated in an emergency room.

Most all orthopedic pain can be managed at home with a “TEN Point Pain Management Plan”.
1. Stop “adding fuel to the fire”. Decrease whatever you are doing that is causing the pain. Sounds like common sense but not a day goes by in my practice when I don’t have to review this.
2. Apply ice to the area with a thin cloth between the skin and the ice. You can ice for 30 minutes before doing some massage or movement of that area.
3. Elevate the leg or arm higher than your heart to decrease swelling. Massage the swollen area pushing the swelling toward your body. Gentle movement can decrease pain.
4. Use a cane, crutch or walker to take pressure off a painful leg. A walker helps for back pain.
5. Tylenol 1000mg three times a day unless you have a liver disorder.
6. An anti-inflammatory pill such as Aleve or Motrin unless you have medical reasons to avoid these medicines.
7. A TENs unit can be purchased at a drugstore for recurrent problems.
8. All pain is associated with inflammation – avoid inflammatory foods and maximize anti-inflammatory foods.
9. A diffuser with lavender essential oil has been shown to be calming and helpful with pain.
10.Lidoderm patch can be purchased at a drugstore.

GOT TIME ON YOUR HANDS #2 – BE WISE AS AN OWL and STAY FOCUSED

Don’t panic, don’t stress your adrenal glands and weaken your immune. Instead, commit to setting aside time each day to improve on one important aspect of your life.

Focus on what you can do to make this situation better. Today focus on staying calm and knowing how to avoid becoming anxious. This will help keep your immune system strong. Decide on three activities that will help keep you calm. Write them down and be sure to practice each several times throughout the day. For example, taking a deep breath when someone begins to talk excessively about the next bad thing that maybe could happen if this and that…… Google deep breathing relaxation techniques.
Second, find positive friends or resources that bring comfort and not anxiety like news stations. Consider reading The Good News internet station, it’s free. Break away from that negative Fb friend.
Third, take a walk outside. Explore a new park. We have so many. Google the Cuyahoga Valley National Park or the Summit County Metro Park System and decide to walk a new trail every day. Keep track of the time or distance you walk every day. Google mind full walking.

These techniques can strengthen your immune system and help avoid illness. Share these positive ideas with a friend and STAY STRONG TOGETHER.

GOT SOME TIME ON YOUR HANDS - Become more mindful of a healthy lifestyle.

In the next few weeks you may find you have more time on your hands (and hopefully less germs). Be productive. Make something good out of this scary crisis facing us all. Take the appropriate precautionary steps to help slow the spread of Covid 19. Follow the CDC website for updates. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html

But don’t panic…..
You can do better. Work to make yourself healthier and share your positive experience with others.

Don’t spend time on negative social media/news stations which may make you more anxious or depressed. There is plenty of research studies showing overly anxious or highly stressed people have a weaker immune system. This can also make it more difficult to deal with daily aches and pains. Take time to strengthen your immune system. Become an expert on anti-inflammatory food which will also help slow down the inflammation causing your orthopedic pain. Look up nutritious recipes that help boost your immunity.

The mind-body connection is a powerful tool that you can train to work in your favor. Take this time to better understand the mind-body connection ( https://chopra.com/articles/mind-body-connection-understanding-the-psycho-emotional-roots-of-disease). Mind-body therapies train the body to affect the mind in a positive way. You can learn these techniques through you-tube videos. Some examples are yoga, tai chi, meditation, mindful eating or walking, prayer, and guided imagery.

Stay active through exercise. From yoga to hiking to biking and don’t forget strength training. Create a stand-up desk with a simple cardboard box and practice some core exercises while spending time on-line. Keep your legs strong, this helps prevent falls and injury and keeps you out of nursing home.

Get outside to soak in some rays if it’s a nice day. You can get your spring gardening started. Build a raised-bed garden filled with organic dirt and replenish it with your organic compost. Start your vegetables indoor and smell that fresh dirt in your house. Aromatherapy is therapeutic, consider adding a diffuser with lavender essential oil in your house.

Help an elderly person avoid panic and disease. Talk to them. Do they need supplies? Encourage them to stay active and exercise.

Clean your hands frequently and wipe down your phone. Don’t become a stressed out germaphobe but practice safe techniques as shown on the CDC website.

At Blanda Orthopedics and Physical Therapy we teach and advocate a healthy lifestyle for a quicker recovery from your orthopedic problems and we hope these same habits will follow you through life. I am closely following the CDC and Ohio Department of Health recommendations for treating our patients safely

Stay strong and carry on!

LIVE A LONGER LESS PAINFUL LIFE AND SAVE MONEY

There are several lifestyle habits that can keep you healthier and more likely to avoid many serious diseases. Living in this manner can result in a less painful life and help you save money.

Body weight is an important factor in avoiding and recovering from orthopedic problems. Excess body weight has been associated with more frequent arthritis flare-ups as well as a more difficult time recovering from injuries or surgery. Other ill effects of obesity are well known. However, the obesity problem is at an epidemic level and it does not have a simple solution for those struggling with it. At Blanda Orthopedic and Physical Therapy we instruct our patients on how to manage their bodyweight as part of their management plan. We have seen excellent results in many patients helping them avoid surgery or recover from it safer and quicker.

Some general points we teach and encourage include following an anti-inflammatory nutrition plan, exercising without further damaging a painful body part and learning how to better protect a troublesome joint.

Managing your bodyweight through proper eating habits can be cheaper than the way you are eating now. Healthy foods are not necessarily more expensive. Since leading a healthy lifestyle keeps you away from the hospital, you will also save money with lower medical expenses.

Most importantly, managing your bodyweight will help ward off most serious medical conditions allowing you to lead a more active and longer life.
