Proposed changes to the public charge rule could deter eligible families from accessing essential nutrition and health programs like WIC, Medicaid, and SNAP—out of fear, not facts.

These programs support healthy families and communities, and no one should be discouraged from using them.

🗣️ Take action: Submit a public comment today to protect access to critical services.

‼️ The Department of Homeland Security’s proposed changes to the public charge rule would open the door to allowing immigration officers to make public charge determinations without consistent standards or guardrails. Families may avoid programs like , Medicaid, and SNAP out of fear that using these services could affect their immigration status.

Strategic Planning Retreat Recap
Amid the beautiful fall colors and sweeping views of the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie, our Board, staff, and facilitator gathered for a productive and inspiring strategic planning retreat. This retreat marked an important milestone in a process that has been underway since June 2025, as WICANYS has been thoughtfully engaging in strategic planning to strengthen our foundation and guide our future growth.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Vassar College for generously donating the lovely meeting hall for two days on its amazing campus, providing the perfect setting for reflection, collaboration, and forward thinking as we chart the next phase of WICANYS’s development.

Over the course of the retreat, we focused on refining our strategic priorities, strengthening how we engage in this work, and laying the groundwork for a stronger, more sustainable Association. Through thoughtful discussion and collaboration, we continued shaping a framework that will help WICANYS build capacity, support local WIC agencies, and strengthen our collective voice across New York State.

✨ WIC Manager’s Workshop – Saratoga Springs ✨

This week, WIC Managers from across New York State came together in beautiful Saratoga Springs for a powerful and inspiring workshop focused on sharing best practices, innovative ideas, and strengthening the support we provide to our WIC families.

From insightful discussions to creative problem-solving sessions, every moment reminded us of the impact we make when we collaborate, learn from one another, and lead with purpose. 💡🤝

A huge thank-you to all the dedicated managers who showed up ready to grow, share, and elevate the WIC program across the state. Your leadership continues to make a difference in the lives of the families we serve. 💙

Advocacy in Action: Advancing WIC Funding in New York State

In recent weeks, WICANYS partnered with Hunger Solutions New York to develop and submit a joint sign-on letter requesting additional state supplemental funding to strengthen WIC services across New York State.

As a result of that effort:
• Assemblymember Jessica González-Rojas has agreed to serve as the Assembly lead on a $30 million state budget request for WIC modernization, local agency infrastructure, and outreach projects.
• WICANYS and HSNY staff and representatives also met with Assemblymember Amy Paulin, Chair of the Assembly Health Committee, to advance this critical conversation.

📝 You can read the joint letter here: http://bit.ly/46CwYiz

These are major steps forward in addressing the local agency funding crisis and ensuring a stronger, more sustainable future for the WIC program across New York State.

📢 WIC Benefits Continue
As of October 1, WIC services and benefits remain available despite the federal government shutdown. WIC-approved stores will continue to accept benefits, and local agencies can continue serving participants. For the most up-to-date guidance, please follow NYS DOH WIC.

But urgent action is still needed. As Georgia Machell, President & CEO of the National WIC Association, reminds us:

“Congress must act with urgency to pass legislation that fully funds WIC, keeps the federal government open, and ensures that federal appropriations law cannot be undermined by administrative actions. Every day of inaction brings us closer to a crisis. Failure to rapidly reopen the government could result in State WIC directors being put in the horrible position of trying to manage their programs with insufficient funds.”
