This winter has been brutal. Cold. Snow. Wind. Ugh.

Progress on the sauna is going about as fast as the snow melt. And while we can't bring the temps up, we can look forward to spring.

I've been winter sowing native flowers as fast as my little family is drinking milk. I plan to add a bed right out the back window of the sauna to enhance the beauty of the view.

Saturday is for living, for tending our lifestyle, for using our hands and caring for one another.

Kombucha is a house staple, and brewing our own is such a savings over store brought, and gives the options for more tailored flavors.

What you need:
🔹️20 grams black tea
🔹️10 grams green tea
🔹️12 cups water - 4 boiling, 8 cold
🔹️1/2 cup sugar
🔹️scoby & starter tea
🔸️glass container
🔸️cheesecloth & rubber band
🔸️fine strainer

Get yourself a scoby (ask friends for their discard!), and get brewing

Boil 4 cups water. Kill the heat and add 20 grams black tea for 10 minutes, add 10 grams green tea and steep another 10 minutes.

In your glass container add the 4 cups of strained tea to 1/2 cup sugar. Stir to dissolve.

Add 8 cups cold water, then your scoby and starter tea.

Cover with cheesecloth and voila!

After a week or so you'll be ready for 2nd ferment to add some natural flavors!

Our build is going slow with the cold weather. Bringing ourselves into these daily activities helps the time pass more easily. Especially with Phil's declaration of another 6 weeks of winter.

Stay warm!

The plunge comes as a quiet shock — a breath that sharpens, a stillness that snaps into focus. In that moment where heat yields to cold, circulation shifts and the nervous system rallies: alertness rises, breath deepens, and sensation centers the mind. People often describe this as clarity — the fog lifting, attention settling into the present. Brief immersion is linked to shifts in brain networks associated with mood, attention, and emotional regulation, and to the release of neurochemicals that support wakeful calm. The cold doesn’t numb — it clarifies it.

Science notes: Short-term cold immersion has been shown to improve mood and increase alertness and positive affect, with changes in brain connectivity linked to attention control and emotion regulation.

Growth often comes through contrast
— light shaped by dark, ease made sweeter by effort.
Sauna follows the same rhythm. Heat opens the body,
softens the edges, invites release. Cold completes the
arc. Stepping into cool water after warmth brings an
immediate shift: breath sharpens, circulation wakes,
attention snaps gently into focus. The body feels strong
and alive. The mind grows quiet. What remains is
clarity — clean, alert, and steady. The cold is not about
pushing through, but about meeting contrast with
presence, allowing it to sharpen awareness and restore
balance.

Brussels sprouts, garlic, clarified grass-fed butter, salt. Nothing more to say. 🤤

I spend a lot of time reading different books for the sauna. I grabbed a gem this week "Rewild Your Home" by Victoria Harrison (substack excerpt in Stories). While my main focus is the sauna, I love adding these ideas into our home - and the gratification for all the biophilic elements we incorporated just by instinct, rather than instruction. Then it's on to tiling books - joy!

So while the living room looks like a wrecking crew came through, dog hair dust bunnies roam the kitchen in droves, and my toddler sorts through the recycling bin - wine bottles and fruit packaging in his wake. . . . I'm bunkering down for just a few minutes between distraction to mentally calm, imagine our dreams coming to fruition, and embibe the my delicious morning coffee in all her glory.

Rooted in stillness

You sit on the bench, watching the flame dance inside the stove. Breath becomes audible — long, deep, unhurried. Heat gathers slowly, and sweat begins to move across your skin, carrying with it what no longer needs holding. Stress loosens. Emotion softens. Outside, trees stretch as far as the eye can reach, nature present in every direction. This is time
held intentionally — shared with a small, intimate group — moving through rounds as the body signals when it’s ready for the next wave.

Nothing to rush. Nothing to perform. Just warmth,
rhythm, and renewal, rooted deeply in stillness.
