Want to be buried as simply and 'greenly' as possible, in a place where conservation practices are prioritized? This couple runs Natural Burial New Mexico (aka La Puerta), in Belen, NM. It's a very special place.

Congrats on the article!

Bryan Beard and Claire McFadyen own La Puerta Natural Burial Ground near Belen, and their mission is to give families a personal way to bury a loved one.

Hi Friends! Please consider a donation to the NM Deathcare Network. Bonne Mori is a founding member of this incredible organization that makes compassionate, sacred nonmedical deathcare accessible to those who cannot pay out of pocket.

Thank you - in advance!

💜Giving Tuesday💜 is a day devoted to generosity. It is a day when we look beyond ourselves and choose to lift up those who have less, those who deserve dignity and care, and those who need a community to wrap around them. Today, I want to introduce you to someone whose life has been touched by that generosity.

Many in Albuquerque know and love Don Schrader, a local legend who has spent decades walking our city barefoot, advocating for simplicity, connection, and compassion. Don has always given freely to others, and today he is sharing his own experience receiving support through the New Mexico Deathcare Network.

Don is working with death doula and NMDN Scribe Jennifer Joyce because of NMDN’s Reimbursement Program. Don lives well below the poverty line and would never have been able to afford death doula care on his own. Thanks to this program, he is receiving the compassionate support he deserves at no cost.

Here are Don’s exact words:

"I highly recommend Jennifer Joyce as a death doula. She has wisdom, compassion and empathy. She has been a caregiver for her mother and her 90-year old grandmother. She has given me advice and rides. She works with experienced death doula, Nikki Neuen (NMDN's President). They both kindly came together on my 80th birthday, last week. They gave me a card, two balloons and two organic fruit and vegetable drinks. YES! I highly recommend Jennifer Joyce as a death doula."

This is the heart of Giving Tuesday. When you give, you make it possible for people like Don to receive care, companionship, and dignity at the most vulnerable time in their lives. Your generosity fills the gaps for those who fall through the cracks. It turns isolation into connection, fear into support, and struggle into comfort.

💰Right now, your gift goes even further. Thanks to Fred Watson’s generous $20,000 matching grant, every dollar you give today is doubled. That means your support provides twice the care, twice the compassion, and twice the hope for people who need it.

Please visit our website at nmdn.org for donation options.

This is what we mean when we say that your death can be a reflection of your life. This is such a lovely memorial of a lovely and unconventional person.

It's true that there is no "correct" way to grieve. Some of us cry and hurt immediately. Some of us focus strictly on a to-do list, processing our feelings step-by-step. Others take to bed. Some of us put off even acknowledging it until it explodes out of us. Grief is as individual as our relationships are... as our love is.

And end-of-life navigators (death doulas) won't prescribe how to 'do' grief. But we will listen, and be there with you as you process. And we have lots of resources for peer support. We got you.

Let's talk about how q***r people do death! Folks who are part of the LGBTQ community often have an extra layer of consideration at end of life because they haven't lived entirely within mainstream expectations. At this brunch, we're going to talk about creative + joyful ways LGBTQ people can (and do) celebrate & memorialize their unique lives. Bring your story. Get inspired. Find connection.
