It largely has to do with genetics, sedentary lifestyle, poor eating habits, traumatic events, and yes the risk can slightly increase (~3%) if one competitively participates in extremely high amounts of running. Some studies define this as a weekly mileage over 43-57 miles.
๐ซIMO, this 3% increase in risk is nothing compared to the immense benefits gained in quality of life, cardiovascular health, mindset, etc.
๐ฅDespite popular belief, running can be one of the most powerful activities to preserve your knees and hips from OA. Studies have shown long-term recreational running decreases your risk of hip and knee OA by 7%! How โbout dat!
