🔆A little trick I’ve been sharing alot lately…..

‼️Our brain can quickly go into FIGHT or FLIGHT mode when we’re triggered because it doesn’t know the difference between your stress response when you’re being chased by a sabertooth tiger 🐅 and getting an email from your boss 📧 . It can’t easily distinguish if you need to fight back, get away or stay calm and troubleshoot the problem.

🧘🏻‍♀️So we have to tell our brain when we’re safe and that we don’t need to fight back or run away. You can do this using this grounding strategy that I call Factual, Physical, Beautiful.

Do this when you start to feel yourself getting elevated or anxious:

Factual:
State a fact. Something you know to be true such as I am sitting in my house in Roswell, Georgia or I’m walking through the streets of New York.

Physical:
Describe something you can feel- like I can feel my feet touching the floor or I can feel my chest rising as I take a deep breath. I keep lots of sensory items like squishies and smooth rocks nearby when I’m seeing clients to help me stay grounded.

Beautiful:
Name something beautiful that you can see. For example, I can see a beautiful painting of a sunset on the wall. Or I can see the way the light is shining into the window.

Then take inventory and see how you’re feeling. Hopefully you’ve helped your brain stay out of or get out of fight or flight, if even for just a moment.

Therapists, this one’s for you. I met Samantha at Pathwelle a few months ago at a networking event where she shared about spinal flow and how it can help people who are stuck in fight or flight. We immediately connected and discovered we knew some of the same people.

A few weeks later, it occurred to me that maybe I was stuck in fight or flight. Constant survival mode. As a mom, our mental load is always at capacity and on top of that as a business owner, my mind is always spinning with what to do next.

But over the past year, I’ve realized that staying busy was helping me continue to bury old wounds. The reasons I became a counselor in the first place and why I want to help others were still there and my body was keeping the score. After 1 session with Samantha, I felt the most relaxed I’ve ever felt in my life. I had so much clarity and was immediately hooked.

If you’re curious, give Samantha a call and she can tell you more about why spinal flow works. Make your own mental health a priority so that you can help others better.

Many of my mom clients struggle with helping their kids coregulate their emotions. I’ve found that often when there is disregulation, there is also a lack of proprioception. This can be even more true when there is also ADHD or autism. I personally believe that the influx of technology use for all of us can also contribute to further disregulation.

This is a great article by an OT that includes 38 proprioceptive exercises for kids. Definitely worth a read for anyone with young kids!

Here’s a free guide created by an Occupational Therapist, which describes the 33 best proprioceptive activities for children.

Has anyone else heard the term “slowmaxing.” Sounds like another catchy slang word, but I actually LOVE this one and that the next generation Is prioritizing mindfulness vs burnout!

https://www.newportinstitute.com/resources/empowering-young-adults/slowmaxxing/

“What Does Slowmaxxing Mean?

Slowmaxxing is the opposite of crashing out and burnout culture. It’s the practice of inviting more stillness into your life in purposeful, mindful ways. It can mean sipping your coffee without multitasking, spending time outside without your phone, or consciously relaxing your shoulders when you notice they’re up to your ears.

Humans weren’t designed to race through each day. But today, young people (and older generations, too) feel stuck in cycles of stress about the past and fear about the future. Our nervous systems haven’t evolved to handle the constant pressure to be productive and efficient 24/7.”

Slowmaxxing is the opposite of crashing out and burnout culture. It’s about inviting more stillness into your life in purposeful ways.
