Please join us in congratulating Emily Vallejo, BSN, RN, on being named a Panhandle Great 25 Nurse!

Emily’s nursing journey began in high school, when she had the opportunity to shadow medical professionals and spend a day in the NICU. That firsthand experience inspired her to pursue neonatal nursing and shaped the career path she has followed ever since.

Over the past nine years at BSA, Emily has grown from a patient care tech in the Resource Department while attending nursing school to a specialized neonatal nurse in the NICU. She reflects on her most affirming moments in nursing: watching her tiniest patients grow, overcome challenges and reunite with their families—moments that remind her why she chose this profession.

Being named one of the Panhandle Great 25 Nurses is an incredible honor for Emily. “It reflects the dedication and compassion I bring to my work in the Neonatal ICU at BSA, where every day is about giving the tiniest of patients a fighting chance and supporting their families through difficult moments.”

Her advice to new nurses is simple and powerful: “Be patient with yourself. Nursing is a journey, and growth takes time.”

Please join us in congratulating Lori Sorensen, RN-BC, on being named a 2025 Panhandle Great 25 Nurse!

Lori’s nursing journey was inspired by her mother, whose dedication to nursing ignited Lori’s own passion for caring for others. This early influence set the stage for over two decades of service at BSA, where she has transformed from a new nurse into a trusted mentor.

This recognition holds a special meaning for Lori. “The number of colleagues, both past and present, who have reached out to me really confirms that I am right where I need to be,” she shares.

Lori also offers advice to new nurses: “Never turn down an opportunity to learn. In fact, you should actively seek them out. Every day brings something new, and every experience helps shape the nurse you become.”
