07/09/2014 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION - NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Reaction to assessor: does not come to front but remains neutral (2) When spoken quietly: hisses, becomes alert (3) Reaction to door cage opening: stays still but remains alert (3) Reaction to touch: retreats, hisses, allowed limited petting but then turned around and swatted at me (5) Reaction to toy or novel object: shows no interest in playing (3) Try picking cat up: unable to pick Princess up, too tense, striking. Notes: Princess was removed from the adoption room a couple of days ago due to a change on her behavior; after spending a couple of days in the holding room she was re-assess today. At the time of the assessment she was is playing the same type of behavior that got her out of the adoption room, we don't know what was the trigger for the change of behavior but she's not allowing petting or handling at this time. I attempt a slow approach using soft vocalization but she only let me pet her for a very short time, then she turned and swatted at me. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, the behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. previous entry: Reaction to assessor: comes to the front of the cage, soliciting, rubbing against the cage front (1) When spoken quietly: stays at front, continues soliciting attention (1) Reaction to door cage opening: remains soft & relaxed (1) Reaction to touch: solicits petting and attention (1) Reaction to toy or novel object: play with the object gently (1) Try picking cat up: tolerant of this type of handling. Notes: Princess interacts with the Assessor, solicits attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. This cat can go to a beginner home.

A volunteer writes: Roxy is a a totally perky girl that has me thinking "Pretty in Pink". Cute as a button and blessed with an awesome smile, Roxy is a playful pup that delights in her playtime and shared moments with her human friends. She's a fabulous ballplayer, accomplished cuddler and responsive listener who charms everyone with her "sit" and shake "paw". She's also a well-mannered dog at the park, trotting by the big boys with ease and staying quietly by my side when an owner of two small dogs approaches for a chat. Although Roxy's past is bit of a mystery, someone has spent some quality time with with her as she walks nicely on leash, checks in every so often, and takes care of "business" while outside. So if you're looking a cheerful "cutie" that has the potential to become your new best friend, come see Roxy - she'll work some magic on you!

07/03/2014 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION - AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Roxy pulls a bit on the leash. She was sociable toward the handler during the assessment - soft body, wagging tail. Roxy was calm and relaxed during handling. She engages in play, body is loose and wiggly, mouth open. Roxy was a bit difficult to push out of the food bowl, but had soft body language. She took the toy and rawhide away but had soft body language. She does not approach other dog, turns body to side. Roxy did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that she can go to an Average home. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor's hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog's mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft 'popping' of the body, etc. Dog might jump on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze2: 1. 6/27/14 - TRAGIC UPDATE: TRENT WAS KILLED. No one saved him. A puppy is dead and it's devastating. I'm sorry, sweet baby. I wish things had worked out and you were playing in the sunshine right now. R.I.P., Trent. I'm so sorry.

THIS PUPPY'S EARS, FRECKLES AND WAGGING TAIL ARE PRECIOUS! Trent is VERY URGENT as he was due out of San Bernardino City Shelter (CA) on Sat., 6/21. When people visit, Trent gives tons of kisses, his tail is always wagging, and loves the attention of adults and children. Cari, whose daughter took video of Trent said Trent is VERY FRIENDLY. He is kenneled alone so we don't know how he is with other dogs. This puppy might not make it beyond 4:30pm TODAY, Tues., 6/24. Please SHARE quickly to save this adorable pup! Remember...I do not allow pledging on my threads. Paypal information will be posted if pulled by rescue which allows those who want to help to make a donation. Thanks.

PetConnect.Us PLEDGE POLICY: I no longer allow pledging on my threads. I am thankful to everyone who offers her/his hard-earned money to help shelter animals. Your kindness, compassion, and generosity are appreciated and admired. I have found that pledges, while helpful to rescues, create friction, judgement, animosity, hostility, and distractions. Pledges attract disreputable rescuers and mislead private adopters who believe they are entitled to the funds. Pledgers will still have the opportunity to donate to the rescues that save the animals they choose to support, as once an animal has been rescued I will post paypal instructions. It's my hope this policy will stop the fighting on the threads which distracts from the mission of saving animals and intimidates people who want to help.

NOTE: I am not a rescuer, I don't pull animals from shelters. My role is to spread the word about animals in danger. I don't coordinate rescues. I don't arrange transport, but if I have contacts I will help. Once the animal is rescued I will post a paypal address or donation information if provided. Pledges are generally for a 501c3 rescue group - though the person who pledged has the discretion to donate to a private adopter or independent rescuer. It is PetConnect.Us policy to not allow the posting of another animal on the thread of one I am networking. Comments promoting other animals will be deleted. Please post pleas on my timeline.

A volunteer writes: A muppet, a meatball, a roly poly low rider, a pleasantly plump mush - you call it and it fits! This morsel of cute is "knee high to a grasshopper", and oh so smiley and tail waggy. Likely housetrained she 'went' as soon as we were out the door, and then she showed off lovely leash manners as we walked to the park. She likes to walk close and checks up often to make sure we are OK. We are, Diana, we are! Posing for pictures looking all girly girly in a pink neckpiece, Diana is a rockstar who takes treats gently as her reward. She loves climbing into my lap and leans into my hand as I pet her face - sort of like a cat would. If I stop petting her she noses me a bit until I start again. How cute is that! Her eyes close in bliss as I pet her, and my reward is a sweet and gentle kiss from her. As other dogs pass she ignores them, content to be with her human friend. In a pen in the back she explores for a few moments, and then comes back to be close to me. This is a little girl who values and enjoys her human connection. She lives up to the definition of her name, 'heavenly', 'divine', luminous', 'perfect'..... I couldn't agree more with the choice of the name Diana for this little smiling mushball. Come meet her today and come up with your own list of adjectives to describe her. You'll need to take her home to complete the list!

06/21/2014 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION - EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Diana walks calmly on leash. She was shy but friendly during the assessment - low body and tail, but trying to stay close. Diana was shy during handling, with stiff or fearful body language. Diana had a low body position during the tag test, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash. She did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. Diana was not interested in toys or rawhide. She was relaxed when approaching a friendly dog, but was not playful. Diana was a bit shy during the behavior assessment but she like to stay close to the handler to be petted. Staff member and volunteer reported that Diana shows some barrier frustration behaviors in her kennel - barking, lunging and aggressively displaying at dogs or people from behind bars but when she is out of the kennel she is a very friendly dog. The behavior department feels that Diana can go to an Experience home. Look: 2. Dog's eyes are averted. Her body posture is a bit stiff and fearful, her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor's cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is low, body a bit stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Food 1. Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away or push her out. Toy 1. No interest. Rawhide 1. No interest. Dog - dog 2. 06/16/2014 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Jake and Fiona, two likely siblings were found as strays and brought to us at the Manhattan Care Center. Their ressemblance is quite striking in looks and behavior. Jake is shy and quiet in his kennel and takes gentle coaxing to entice him to go for a walk. Free in a pen, he chooses to stay nearby me and squeezes tightly and sheepishly against my legs when he hears a sudden noise or loud bark. He comes right away when called. Jake wears and elegant, silky and well groomed grey and fawn coat. He has the sweetest smile. He is well nourished and quite healthy looking just like his companion, Fiona. On the way to the park, Jake pulls only occasionally. He seems very much housetrained. He is a bit distracted by all the activity going on in the park..so many people, barbecued meats, zillions of children and dogs of all sizes and backgrounds. He does not know where to look and what to do with himself. He looks quite puzzled... Jake sometimes goes toward other dogs but not in an aggressive way and his interest is very short lived as he appears to prefer sticking with me. Back in the yard for a much needed rest, Jake elects to lay down at my feet. Caresses are most welcome as well as a few treats. He is a very very gentle, friendly, sociable although timid dog, at least in a shelter environment. Jake is waiting with us to meet you hoping to become your forever best friend and bloom into a most amazing companion in your hands.

06/15/2014 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION - EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Jake did not greet the assessor and instead went on to sniff the ground. He had tense body postures throughout the handling items; however he tolerated handling. Jake ran away from the assessor during the tag item and he stopped engaging with the assessor. He would not approach the assessor after the item was completed. Jake stopped eating and retreated when the assessor reached to take the food bowl away. He showed no interest in toys or rawhides; so resource guarding is inconclusive. Jake approached the helper dog with soft body language. Jake cautiously greets all strangers with soft body language throughout the care center. Jake stays close to the handler and will sit next to the handler. Volunteers have reported that he has soft body postures and is friendly on walks. The behavior department recommends that he go to a calm, quiet home with previous dog experience. It is also recommended that he go to a home without young children. Older children may be considered pending an interaction and specific counseling. Look: 2 Dog's eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor's cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2 Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching, may have long lip or lip lick. Squeeze 1: 1 Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1 Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 1 Dog lifts head and ceases eating when you reach to pull the bowl away or push him out. Toy: 1 No interest. Rawhide: 1 No interest.

Dog-to-dog: 2 Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip long or neutral. Helper: A1003028
