Healthy strategies for managing seasonal affective disorder (and protecting yourself):

1. Light therapy – Use a bright light box for 20–30 minutes each morning to simulate daylight.
2. Spend time outside – Even a short time outdoors during daylight helps.
3. Stay active – Regular exercise (walking, stretching, or anything that moves you) releases mood-boosting endorphins.
4. Healthy sleep routine – Keep regular sleep/wake times to keep your inner rhythm in sync.
5. Balanced diet – Aim for nourishing foods; talk with a provider about vitamin D if needed.
6. Talk therapy – Therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) are adapted for SAD (CBT-SAD) to help change patterns of thoughts and behaviors.
7. Medication – For some, antidepressants may help, work with your health care provider.
8. Mind-body and social connection – Practice relaxation, stay in touch with community, and make time for meaningful activities.

For questions about seasonal affective disorder, your integrated care team can explore tools and strategies with you to try at your own pace. Reach out by phone or through the MyHealth app.

When seasonal affective disorder hits, it can ripple through our communities:

• You might feel cut off from loved ones.
• It is harder to carry on cultural practices, especially if energy is low.
• Work, school, and relationships can suffer, and the long darkness can feel isolating.

But you don’t have to go through it alone. Together, we can bring more light.

For questions about SAD or winter mood changes, your integrated care team can offer guidance. Contact them to meet with a behavioral health consultant or message through the MyHealth app anytime. If you or someone you know is struggling, remember support is available — call or text the 988 Su***de and Crisis Lifeline.
