Lassa fever is a sickness caused by a virus. It’s mostly found in parts of West Africa, and people can get it from a certain kind of rat. These rats sometimes carry the virus and can spread it by peeing or pooping on food or in places where people live.
If someone touches or eats food that’s been contaminated by the rat, they might catch the virus. Sometimes, people can also get it from someone who is already sick, especially if they’re taking care of them.
Lassa fever can make people feel really sick, like having a bad flu, with fever, headaches, and even tummy pain. Most people get better, but it can be very serious for some.
The best ways to prevent it are by keeping food safe from rats, cleaning up food spills, and washing hands often.
