Reproductive Rights and Justice at MLaw RRJ @ MLaw seeks to educate and engage the MLaw community about reproductive justice, including reproductive healthcare access, choices, and rights.

Our Vision: Reproductive justice will exist when all people can exercise the rights and access the resources they need to thrive and to decide whether, when, and how to have and parent children with dignity, free from discrimination, coercion, or violence. Our Values: dignity, empowerment, diversity, intersectionality, equality, law, autonomy

The Trump administration will do whatever it takes to limit abortion access, now proposing a regulation under Title X* that would include a domestic “gag rule” on abortion referrals.

The proposed rule, available here in full, would make it even more difficult for women seeking abortion care to find it, by limiting medical professionals to “nondirective counseling on abortion.” Under this scheme, doctors could provide nothing but a general list of healthcare providers, only some of which provide abortions, and only to someone who “clearly states that she has already decided to have an abortion.”

In other words, no one strongly considering an abortion would be able to rely on a Title X grantee to share comprehensive information about the procedure. This regulation would further devastate the already-failing women’s health system in the U.S.

We need your help to stop the assault on abortion rights.

· Submit an official comment to HHS through Planned Parenthood.

· Contact the officials in charge, including:

o President Trump

o Vice President Pence

o The Secretary of HHS. Call him at 202-690-7000, or email him at secretary@hhs.gov.

· Submit your own comment. Once the regulation has been filed in the Federal Register, we’ll distribute a link to the regulations.gov comment page.

* Title X is a federal grant program for family planning services. In 2016, 4 million people used clinics that received Title X funding.

The president hailed the proposal — a top priority of social conservatives who have been among his staunchest supporters — at a gala for an anti-abortion organization.

For the most common second-trimester abortion procedure, "D&E." Husbands and parents of minors can also file a civil suit for damages against the provider, and can even receive attorney's fees.

Even in cases of spousal r**e.

Dear fellow members of the Michigan Law School community,

We at Reproductive Rights and Justice believe that nothing is more basic to the reproductive justice movement than creating opportunity for individuals and families to build full and productive lives, free from violence and discrimination. Keeping families together; ensuring families have the ability to visit and spend time with one another; providing safe spaces in which all people can thrive: these are the values upon which the reproductive justice movement is built.

Reproductive Rights and Justice at MLaw stands firmly beside members of our law school community and our nation who are being targeted by President Trump’s reprehensible Executive Orders and the racism and xenophobia raging in the White House. If you are outraged, as we are, please consider supporting the following organizations in whatever way you can:

The White Helmets
American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee
International Refugee Assistance Program
Muslim Anti-Racism Collaborative
Arab American Action Network
Urban Justice Center
Council on American-Islamic Relations

When any member of our community is threatened, it is incumbent upon us to speak out. RRJ stands in solidarity, love, and action.

Sincerely,

RRJ Board
