Statement from Maryland State Police :

“Since the start of Winter Storm Fern, Maryland State Police have received nearly 1400 calls for service and responded to 84 crashes.

The message remains the same today as it was yesterday: avoid travel if possible. Snow and freezing temperatures have made for icy road conditions. If you absolutely have to travel - for your safety and the safety of emergency personnel:
- Clear ALL snow from your vehicle and headlights before driving. If you can’t see, you can’t drive!
- Alert someone to where you are going. Give yourself time to get there.
- Do not crowd the plow. Give them space to work.
- Remember, bridges, overpasses, and less frequently traveled roads will freeze first.

Snow emergency plans remain in effect statewide. Follow roads.maryland.gov for the latest road conditions and stay weather aware. Stay safe!”

As we wind down the end of the year, entrenched in the darkest of days, I use the genius of technology to bring the Sun to my office during long days inside ☀️

This little magical box is a Verilux “happy lamp” designed to mimic sunlight. Happy lights use 10,000 lux lamps to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), depression, sleep issues (jet lag, insomnia), and dementia by regulating mood-boosting brain chemicals like serotonin and melatonin 🧠

My favorite quality of light is the sun shining through the trees, so I set up my fall tree to mimic that light l 🌲

I added an orange filter to cut back on the blue hue as too much blue light creates strain on our eyes. I keep the light on as long as the sun is up and shut it off when the sun sets, giving myself the experience of exposure to sunlight at the actual times it is present ☀️

Steaming pears for the Metal Element Retreat - did you know steamed pears support respiratory health 🍐 🫁 😷

I added dates, goji berries, honey, cinnamon, and a dash of orange peel to make the perfect tonic to clear a cough or sore throat. No symptoms, no problem, this is delicious as sh*t 🍐

Autumn resonates with the Metal Element 🍁 ⚔️

Poetry is the art of precisely choosing the words that best fit to capture a particular moment, feeling, or experience. Metal longs for what was, what never will be again, grief. Metal is the expression of being wholly present in the moment, experiencing the awe of what is 🍂 The leaves turn and let go within a few weeks, without hoarding or fighting this natural process.

In my Metal Element Mini Retreat we will explore poems relating to these themes and take some time to reflect on experiences that give us the sense of awe and hold us captive in the present moment 🌕
