Shoutout to our president
“PALLA was proud to be represented at the PAEA Educational Forum by two outstanding presenters: Dr. Cara Felter and Laurarose Dunn-O’Farrell! Their session, “Level-up Your Assessment Strategies and Stay Well in the Process,” generated robust participant conversation and collaboration. During the session, participant used evidence from the presenters’ recent scoping review to inform take-home strategies to use in their PA program.
PA education thrives when we stay connected to the high quality and caliber, and shared mission of educating the next generation of clinician leaders as seen at the PAEA Education Forum. “

Celebrating Leadership & Community at MdAPA’s 2025 Annual CME Conference

The MdAPA Conference was full of energy and connection! We cheered on Maryland PA programs at the annual Challenge Bowl. Congrats to Towson University for taking the win! We also celebrated leadership transitions: Steve Cohen passed the gavel to Laurarose Dunn O’Farrell, with Melecia Helwig-Henson as new VP and Robin Fencel as President-elect. Here’s to continued collaboration and growth!

PA Advocacy in Action: Celebrating PA Week & Advancing the Profession
PA Week Spotlight: Maryland’s Legacy of Advocacy and the Road Ahead
As we celebrate PA Week, Maryland’s physician assistant/associate (PA) community stands at a pivotal moment, reflecting on decades of progress and looking ahead to a future shaped by bold advocacy and grassroots leadership.

A Legacy of Milestones
Since The Maryland Academy of Physician Assistants (MdAPA’s) founding in 1977, Maryland has led PA advancement. With nearly 3,900 PAs practicing statewide (NCCPA, 2024), the profession continues to expand access to care and improve patient outcomes.
Recent events like the MdAPA CME Conference, PALLA Research Hour, and honoring Rick Rohrs with the James F. Cawley Award highlight our community’s leadership, scholarship, and unity.

Advocacy in Action: The PA Modernization Act
The 2024 PA Modernization Act (HB0806/SB0167) replaced outdated delegation agreements with collaboration agreements, allowing PAs to maintain continuity of care even if their collaborating physician retires (AAPA, 2024).
This success was driven by grassroots advocacy and MdAPA’s legislative leadership. Continued efforts are needed to modernize laws, reduce administrative burdens, and expand PA recognition.

The American Academy of PAs (AAPA) champions full practice authority, reimbursement equity, and increased visibility in federal healthcare policy—ensuring PAs are not just part of the conversation, but leading it.
Join PALLA’s PA Week Luncheon October 24th, 2025 for another Advocacy-in-Action opportunity and to hear the latest on advocacy efforts. Registration required -see link below in “Events”.

Get a Seat at the Table
This PA Week, let’s honor the past and commit to the future. Whether you’re a student, educator, clinician, or advocate, your voice matters. Join MdAPA, support PAPAC, mentor a future PA, and engage in legislative efforts. Together, we can ensure Maryland PAs not only have a seat at the table, but help set the agenda.

At the Frostburg State University PA Program, it was Day 1 of the student-planned Spirit Week, in celebration of the profession’s national recognition. The theme of the day was “matching/twins,” and so, I am giving a shout out to 2 incredible cohort leaders, matching with me in the title of ‘President.’ We could have matched in clothing but I wanted to highlight their exceptional qualities, which is reflective of the strength in the PA profession.

These class presidents, Taylor Campbell (C26) and Mary Stone-Murphy (C27), agreed to join me in representation of leadership across the PA continuum and support this October. Both are incredibly talented, passionate, and dedicated advocates, bravely reaching out beyond the zones of comfort and the status quo. That is where the real growth happens and that is the place we often hold ourselves back from the reasonable risk of meeting or exceeding a challenge. Otherwise, status quo is like atrophied muscles. Without progressive conditioning, we stagnate and sell ourselves short of our potential throughout the journey of lifelong learning.

We are great as a profession but our colleagues, peers, friends, and students are struggling with the demands of today’s quotas, technology inundation, unrealistic standards that predicate risk of error, and a decade old societal call for wellness and burnout reduction.

As presidents, we are choosing to represent and be more than the minimum of what is expected. This means sharing some of the other, more vulnerable sides, that exist outside of the PA world. And so, we honor our separate yet intersecting journey, with the collage below.

Remember that we are more than solely a PA, or PA student; we are humans. We need fewer barriers that disconnect us from one another, and yet we constantly seek innovation in society. Clearly, we have a tendency to run then think and by then, we’ve already missed the beautiful scenery and the breathtaking scents along the way. Being human is where the healing happens.

Join us for by sharing your joy, fun, silly, and passions. Celebrate with because being has never felt so good!
