September is National Recovery Month. Each day we will feature the story of someone in recovery and give hope to those still struggling. ❤️
"My name is Haley Horne, and I am a person in long-term recovery. My recovery date is May 11, 2018. Since that date, I have not found the need to use any kind of substance to change the way that I feel.
I began with drinking alcohol at 14 and within a year was using substances. I never felt I was a part of anything and always felt alone. I sought for somewhere to belong and fit in. The substances made me feel better and numbed all the trauma I would go through until I got into recovery. By the end of my use, I was an IV user of he**in and methamphetamines, unhoused, and isolated from all of the people in my life.
I was arrested and went to jail on May 10, 2018. After sitting for two months in the Calhoun County Jail, I was able to go to a year long recovery house and do 20 months in Calhoun County Drug Court. The recovery house introduced me to my pathway for recovery that I continue to practice today. In recovery I have gained friendships and a sisterhood of women in my life who are there through everything. I am a part of my family again and have an amazing, supportive partner who continues to encourage me.
I never thought I would be able to go back to college, and beating the odds, I was able to obtain my Bachelor’s in Social Work from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. While in school, I became a Certified Recovery Support Specialist. I then went to the University of Kentucky and obtained my Master’s in Social Work. Through recovery, I found my purpose in life finally, and that purpose is to help others like me.
Today, I have peace and happiness. The hamster running on the wheel in my mind finally slowed down. I am able to LIVE today! Living was something I had never done and I am grateful for everything that happened in my life leading me to where I am today!"
