1. Start the year alert, not autopilot
New routines, new schedules, and post-holiday fatigue can lower awareness. Pause before entering or exiting places—parking lots, stores, churches, gyms.
2. Head up, phone down
Cold weather sends us rushing. Take a moment to look around before unlocking your car or door.
3. Notice what doesn’t belong
Trust that inner nudge. If something feels off—a person, vehicle, or situation—create distance early.
4. Winter layers can limit awareness
Hoods, hats, and earbuds reduce vision and hearing. Keep one sense fully engaged when out alone.
5. Park and walk with intention
Choose well-lit areas. Walk confidently and directly—no wandering or searching once you exit your car.
6. Vary routines in the new year
Small changes in routes, timing, or parking spots reduce predictability.
7. Listen before you open
Whether at home, work, or church, pause and verify before opening doors—especially during darker winter evenings.
8. Awareness is a habit, not fear
Being alert isn’t about being afraid—it’s about being prepared and present.

The start of a new year is a great time to reset habits—including situational awareness. Small choices today can prevent big problems tomorrow.
