Big news for our community — Mad River Community Hospital is investing in a brand new, state-of-the-art hyperbaric chamber for our Wound Care & Hyperbaric Medicine department.

Hyperbaric chambers are used to heal chronic and hard-to-heal wounds, reduce scarring from radiation therapy or surgery, and can help heal chronic infections.

We're the only provider of hyperbaric medicine in Humboldt County. The nearest alternative is more than 3 hours away. This new chamber means our patients get access to the latest technology without leaving the community.

We're proud to make this investment in the health of our neighbors.

As spring gets closer, it’s natural to start thinking about what you want to do — trips, projects, activities, getting outside more.

You don’t have to commit to all of it yet. Let ideas come before schedules.

Health for the long run often means giving plans time to take shape instead of filling every weekend at once.

When your child needs care, you want to know they're in the right hands — and close to home. Our experienced pediatrician, Dr. James Matsuda, holds pediatric clinics each week at Humboldt Family Medical Care.

Our ER is also the only pediatric-certified ER in Humboldt. That certification means our ER team has specialized training in treating children — from infants to teens.

Your kids deserve expert care in a place that knows them. We're here for it. Dr. Matsuda is accepting new patients – call us at 707-839-4852.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. — but it's also one of the most preventable when caught early.

The updated recommendation? Start screening at age 45, not 50. Rates have been rising in younger adults, so that guideline changed. If you have a family history, your doctor may recommend starting even earlier.

Not sure where to start? Our primary care clinics are accepting new patients.

Ready to wrap up Heart Month with a simple commitment? Pick ONE small thing you can do each day for your heart:

• Add a handful of berries or a serving of oatmeal to your morning
• Take a 10-15 minute walk after lunch or dinner
• Swap one sugary drink for water
• Practice 5 minutes of deep breathing before bed
• Add an extra vegetable to dinner

That's it. One thing. The goal isn't a complete lifestyle transformation—it's building momentum you can sustain.
What's your one thing? 💙

Waiting for a mammogram appointment—and then waiting for results—can be stressful. We get it. That's why we work to get you in quickly, typically within 5 business days.

Our 3D mammography technology is especially helpful for women with dense breast tissue. Traditional 2D mammograms can miss things or require callbacks for additional imaging. 3D mammography gives our radiologists a clearer, more detailed picture—which means fewer callbacks and more confidence in your results.

We're one of only three providers in Humboldt County offering 3D mammography. If you've been putting off scheduling, or if you're tired of long waits or drives, ask your medical provider for a referral to MRCH.

Health for the long run happens step by step.

It’s shaped over time, through small choices and regular check-ins.

If all you do this month is stay connected to your health — by paying attention, asking a question, or scheduling a visit — that matters.

While there's no cure for AMD, research shows you can lower your risk and slow progression with a few key strategies.

Eat for your eyes: A diet rich in leafy greens (spinach, kale, collards), colorful vegetables, and fatty fish like salmon supports eye health. Think of it as heart-healthy eating that also benefits your vision.

Ask about AREDS supplements: The Age-Related Eye Disease Studies found that specific supplements—containing vitamins C and E, zinc, copper, lutein, and zeaxanthin—can slow AMD progression in people with intermediate or advanced disease. These aren't for everyone, so talk to your eye doctor about whether they're right for you.

Protect your eyes: Quit smoking (a major risk factor), wear sunglasses outdoors, and keep up with regular eye exams.

Small steps, big impact. Progress, not perfection. 👁️

Is it a cold? The flu? COVID? RSV? When you or your child is miserable, guessing doesn't help.

Our lab offers a PCR respiratory panel that tests for flu, RSV, and COVID—all with one simple swab. No needles, no multiple tests, just quick answers so your provider can recommend the right treatment.

Think it could be strep? PCR gives your provider accurate results right away, so you get the right treatment from the start.

Ask your provider for an order, then walk in.🩺

Understanding your heart health starts with a few key tests. Ask your doctor about:

• Lipid panel – measures cholesterol and triglycerides
• Blood pressure check – can be done at most appointments
• Blood glucose/A1C – screens for diabetes, a major heart disease risk factor
• EKG – checks your heart's electrical activity (we offer walk-in outpatient EKGs with your provider's order)

We process most laboratory tests right here in Arcata, so you’ll get answers fast. Not sure what to ask for? Bring this list to your next appointment, and ask for a referral to MRCH for your tests💙
