Your child's sudden "attitude problem" might actually be their brain struggling with darkness.

With school starting at 7:30-8am and sunset at 5pm, many Humboldt kids are spending their daylight hours in classrooms. Add coastal fog and rain, and they might go days without real sun exposure.

SAD looks different in kids:
❗ Irritability and tantrums (not always sadness)
❗ "My tummy/head hurts" with no medical cause
❗ Grades dropping, can't focus on homework
❗ Withdrawing from friends and activities
❗ Sleeping more but still exhausted
❗ Craving carbs/sweets more than usual
❗ Younger kids may regress (bedwetting, baby talk)

Trust your instincts: You know your child. If something seems off as the days get shorter, it might not be a phase or growing pains.
Our pediatric clinic can help evaluate whether your child might have SAD. Early intervention makes all the difference.

Holiday eating doesn't have to be all-or-nothing. Yes, enjoy the special treats and family traditions - but don't abandon vegetables for a month. Pack snacks for shopping trips, eat something before parties so you're not starving, drink water. The goal isn't perfect eating; it's feeling good enough to actually enjoy the celebrations.

SO MUCH TO DO! The "most wonderful time of the year" can quickly become the most overwhelming.

Here's your permission slip:
You don't have to attend everything.
You don't have to host if it depletes you.
You don’t have to travel if it’s too much.
You don't have to maintain traditions that no longer serve your family.

Setting boundaries isn't selfish—it's self-care. And it's health care.

Try these boundary-setting phrases:
✓ "That won't work for us this year, but thank you for thinking of us"
✓ "We're keeping things low-key this season"
✓ "I can come for dessert, but not the whole evening"
✓ "Let's celebrate together after the holidays when things calm down"

Your mental and physical health matter more than meeting everyone's expectations. Protect your energy like the precious resource it is. Because you can't pour from an empty cup -especially not holiday punch.

What boundary do you need to set this season? 💚

Our skilled radiologic technologists capture the images that guide diagnoses, track healing, and save lives. With expertise, compassion, and precision, they make the invisible visible, turning technology into answers.

But our team offers something technology alone can't: genuine care. They're the calming voice explaining the procedure, the gentle hand positioning you just right, the reassuring smile when you're anxious. They work long hours, often behind the scenes, combining technical excellence with human compassion.

To our rad techs: Thank you for your dedication, your expertise, and for being the vital link between technology and patient care. You don't just take images—you provide clarity, hope, and answers when our community needs them most.

For many in Humboldt County, the return to standard time means waking in darkness, commuting in darkness, and coming home in darkness. Your body notices—even if your mind says it shouldn't matter.

Your circadian rhythm—your body's internal clock—controls more than just sleep. It regulates mood, energy, appetite, and even your immune system. When darkness comes early, your brain starts producing melatonin (the sleep hormone) while you're still at work or making dinner.

First week survival guide:
✓ Get outside within 2 hours of waking—even cloudy light helps
✓ Eat lunch by a window or outside if possible
✓ Keep regular sleep/wake times despite the darkness
✓ Resist the urge to hibernate—maintain social plans
✓ Move your exercise to morning if you can (it amplifies light exposure)

Warning signs you're more than just "adjusting":
• Extreme fatigue by 3pm
• Mood changes that affect work/relationships
• Overwhelming carb cravings
• Difficulty getting out of bed despite adequate sleep

This isn't weakness—it's biology. And it's treatable.
