While there could be other factors affecting your sleep, we want to shine a light on how phone usage before bed can be negatively affecting your sleep. 📱

When you use your phone at night, your screen emits blue light that can suppress melatonin and stimulate your brain causing you to become more alert when you should be winding down for bed.

Here are a few things you can do to ensure your phone is down before you go to bed:
📱 Charge your phone away from your bed so that you don't get tempted to reach out for it
📱 Set a "no-phone-time" boundary (a 30-60 minute buffer) before bedtime and stick to it
📱 Use an alternative alarm so that you don't rely on your phone being next to you

If you try becoming more disciplined by putting your phone away before bed and still have trouble sleeping, maybe it's time to evaluate with your healthcare provider to see if there are any underlying health issues, such as sleep apnea.

There could be other reason you're not able to fall asleep at night such as drinking caffeine or exercising too close to bedtime. Preparing your body for rest is essential to getting quality sleep.

Creating a personalized bedtime routine can make a big difference in your sleep quality. Taking time to wind down each night helps you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.

Some things you can do before bed during a routine include:
📖 Reading a book
☕️ Drinking decaffeinated tea
🚿 Taking a warm shower
😮‍💨 Doing breathing exercises

If you try winding down before bed and you're still having trouble falling asleep, maybe it's time to evaluate with your healthcare provider to see if there are any underlying health issues, such as sleep apnea.

Our team members, Kearston Block and Hunter Jose, are excited to attend the 9th Annual Comprehensive Lung and Breathing Summit (CLB Summit), hosted by UCHealth and the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

This premier event brings together leading healthcare professionals across pulmonary medicine, thoracic surgery, allergy/immunology, sleep medicine, and critical care to collaborate, share insights, and advance the future of respiratory care.

The summit focuses on seven key pillars of pulmonary health:

➡️ Asthma and allergy
➡️ Sleep medicine
➡️ Transplant
➡️ Pulmonary vascular disease
➡️ Advanced lung disease
➡️ Lung malignancy
➡️ Complex airway management

Having our team represented will give us the opportunity to connect directly with physicians, nurses, and advanced practice providers working on the front lines of pulmonary care.

We’re looking forward to sharing how our solutions support better outcomes, building new relationships within the respiratory health community, and engaging in meaningful conversations about the future of sleep health and respiratory therapy.

If you’re attending, we’d love to connect!

While the answer to this question can vary from person to person, we want to remind you about the importance of sticking to a consistent sleep schedule.

Going to bed and waking up at different times each day can disrupt your circadian rhythm — your body’s internal clock. For the next week, choose a consistent bedtime and wake-up time. Try to stay within one hour of those set times each day to help regulate your sleep and improve overall rest.

If you stick to this schedule and still find yourself not feeling well rested, maybe it's time to evaluate with your healthcare provider to see if there are any underlying health issues, such as sleep apnea.

Ever had a dream that "felt so real!"? You were probably in this stage of sleep. 🫨

Here's your final quick quiz to test your knowledge on sleep stages.

Stage 4 is considered REM sleep. Did you know that your eyes move quickly back and forth behind your eyelids during this stage? That's why this stage is called Rapid Eye Movement.

During this stage, your brain is very active. Your heart rate increases and so does your blood pressure causing you to experience faster and irregular breathing. However, your muscles become temporarily paralyzed and this is what keeps you from acting out your dreams if you have any. Read on to learn more about this sleep stage!

All of this sleep cycle talk, but what stage is most important?

While passing through every stage of sleep is vital to a successful night, the third stage (N3) is the deepest, most restorative one of them all.

During this 20-40 min. stage, your body:
🧠 Releases growth hormones
🦴 Performs tissue, muscle, and bone repair
🤧 Improves immune function
☁️ Processes memories

Getting enough deep sleep is vital to wake up feeling refreshed and recharged. Send this to a friend who needs a reminder to get some good sleep tonight! 😉

How'd you do on this pop question? 👀

Here's yet another quick quiz to test your knowledge on sleep stages.

Stage 3 (N3) is considered deep sleep. During this stage, your body is now entering deep sleep, slowing down brain activity. It becomes difficult to wake up during this stage and is where our body does a lot of the work it can't do while we're awake. Swipe to learn more about this sleep stage!

Hey sleep friends! We’re back with more Weiss Words from Carleara Weiss, Ph.D., MS, RN ⭐️

CPAP isn’t the only option for treating sleep apnea. In this episode, Dr. Weiss dives into alternative CPAP therapy devices—specifically oral appliances. She explains what they are, how they work to keep the airway open during sleep, and what the research says about their success rates for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea.

Thinking about trying one? It is important that you speak with your doctor or sleep specialist first to determine if an oral device is appropriate for you and to ensure it’s properly fitted and monitored for effectiveness.

And that's a wrap on sleep trends with Dr. Weiss. Stay tuned for when we share more Weiss Words with you soon. 🧠 💤
