Did you know that perineal massage can help reduce the risk of a grade 3 or grade 4 tear during birth? Follow these 3 steps to help prepare the perineal tissues:

1. Massage the perineal body - side to side, up and down, and diagonally
2. Massage the l***a
3. Massage the vaginal opening - insert one finger about a fingernails length into the opening, imagine a clock and pull to 3,4,5,6,7,8, and 9, holding for 20 seconds. Finish by performing 10 u-shaped sweeps back and forth

While it may feel a bit uncomfortable at first, it should not hurt! Start performing 2-3x/week around 33 weeks for best results.

Diastisis Recti is extremely common, with 100% of pregnant women having some form of DRA by week 35, and 39% still have DRA at 6 months postpartum. Here’s a test you can do to determine if you have DRA.

Do a mini sit-up without bracing your core
Feel for ab separation and depth

Retest with bracing:
Inhale through your nose
Exhale through your mouth, then contract your lower, middle, and upper abs
Do a mini sit up with your core braced

You’re feeling for ab separation, coning and doming. Abnormalities with this test are separations wider than 2 fingers, and any coning or doming of the abs. Pelvic floor PT can help manage and heal diastisis recti, send us a message to learn more!
