- [ ] Doing the hard thing is...well...hard. Having hard conversations and committing to the truth no matter the cost are not actions for the faint of heart. "Did you say heart?" Yeah...it's therapy. That's what we do. Put our hearts on the (starting) line, and listen to where they want to go next...

Grief and loss are everyday occurrences…

I lost my dad to a terminal illness this past January. It was striking how much I missed him, hated him, and was relieved for him (that he was no longer in pain).

Now, every day I realize that little versions of the same feelings: sadness, anger, peace, curiosity, confusion…

Life gives us so many opportunities to practice grieving. Being bummed about a date cancelling last-minute. Hearing your best friend is moving away. Finding out your partner now longer wants to be with you. Learning that the company you work for is downsizing.

Daily we have chances to develop our capacities for perspective and assessing our values. We are faced with a need for grace and patience. We discover what really matters to us because we have to let go…

Living is difficult…and then some we love will die. Grieving any type of loss is hard, but permanence is a particular type of suffering. It’s draws upon a kind of love that that will adapt, but will not let go—not entirely. It is an human experience everyone goes through, and yet can feel so personal that it seems no one can truly understand it.

Life transitions are rife with stressors...

“This is not a time to make big decisions” is the popular advice for those moving to a new area, taking a new job, losing an old job, or going through a breakup. Yet, often chaos begets chaos, and we need something/someone to slow us down.

I sought counseling as a way of slowing down in order to feel what my busyness was distracting from. When I moved to college, student support services had it on campus for FREE! After graduating I began working in the therapeutic industry I was so inspired. And being surrounded by kind and helpful people thousand of miles away from home was necessary when re-rooting my life across the country.

Now, it seems like people come and go, jobs and education transition in and out. And fortunately there are those who are available at just the right time to come alongside you. Sometimes friends, sometimes family, sometimes coworkers, sometimes a therapist…

Anxiety: what if it's not all bad?

ANXIETY IS A NATURAL RESPONSE TO A WORLD THAT IS TRYING TO HURT US. YOU’RE NOT A MESS OF ISSUES, YOU HAVE PREPARED YOURSELF TO EXPECT THE WORST. THIS KEEPS YOU ON YOUR TOES AND READY TO ACT…OFTEN AGAINST YOURSELF.

“It is no approximation of health to be well-adapted to a sick world.”
-Krishnamurti

Generally developed as a coping skill early in life, Anxiety becomes such a practiced response to everything from not being with your partner to whether you locked the doors or not. You mind knows that it needs to worry about something, and sometimes its intuition can be right. Maybe your partner is cheating on you. Maybe you should double-check the door locks next time.

However, when it becomes the dominant experience in your life it can lead to hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and mental decay. We are built as humans to experience anxiety, but only for short bursts of time. If we were in danger of being mauled by a wild animal, or unsure about what mood dad would be in when he got home from work…these are moments we need to be prepared for. But to be in that state constantly is the limitation of our psyche and biology.
