On a misty morning in Laguna Beach, we sat with coffee, birdsong, and the past tangled with the present.
This recent trip held two sacred bookends ⬇️
A memorial for an old friend and a family baptism. One honoring a life once shared, the other marking a life newly devoted.
In between, we walked old streets, met faces from youth, and watched our son explore the terrain of his father’s memories.
Seeing him paddle out into the surf for the memorial, surrounded by love and saltwater, then being baptized as a family, was like watching past and future collide in the present moment.
“It felt like I was floating in my heart,” he said afterward.
What touched us most wasn’t just the beauty of either ceremony, it was the feeling of being held in community, in prayer, in remembrance.
Places like made this possible, not just by offering a pool and a space, and alternative cancer care but by opening a door for our family to experience grace, transition, and renewal outside the confines of tradition.
We weren’t seeking a vacation. We were being reshaped through grief, through celebration, through the mystery in-between.
