We are proud to announce our DAISY Nurse Educator Award recipient of the quarter, Jacob Henson, RN. Jacob is a nurse in the Emergency Department. His knowledge and willingness to teach made an impression on a future nurse.

“Jake was always educating me and my classmate and guiding us through every step in a quick and effective manner during the critical moments of his patient’s lives. He explained everything that was going on and the reasons behind it, even while helping the doctor provide quality care and leading other team members to provide effective management of care for severely ill patients. Jake’s communication is high quality and effective at every element; while leading, while teaching, and while caring. Jake made sure to communicate with everyone around him, including us.”

The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem) Award is an international recognition program that celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day.

On Monday, UK King’s Daughters performed its first Barostim implant procedure for the treatment of heart failure — marking an exciting milestone in advanced cardiac care.

Heart failure occurs when the heart cannot pump blood effectively. This leads the baroreceptors, specialized nerve endings that detect pressure changes in the arteries, to send fewer signals to the brain. In response, the brain activates a “stress response,” causing the heart to work harder. Over time, this added strain worsens heart failure symptoms.

The Barostim system helps break this cycle. It delivers gentle electrical pulses to the baroreceptors, restoring their communication with the brain. This reduces the stress response and helps the heart function more efficiently. Unlike other therapies, Barostim does not require hardware in the heart or its blood vessels. During the procedure, vascular surgeons Omran Abul-Khoudoud, M.D., and David Dockray, M.D., implanted a carotid sinus lead on the carotid artery and placed the Barostim NEO pulse generator under the skin, similar to a pacemaker.

Patients typically experience gradual improvement in their heart failure symptoms as the device is fine-tuned over several weeks. Barostim therapy is used alongside standard medication management.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer this innovative therapy to our heart failure patients here at UK King’s Daughters,” said J.R. White, D.O., cardiologist and medical director of the Heart Failure Clinic. “This therapy offers significant promise to those with heart failure. Having it available at King’s Daughters will improve access and quality of life for so many people.”
