Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine

Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine The Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine In 2016, we celebrated the 40th anniversary of our founding.

The Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine is a leader in training dedicated primary care physicians who are prepared to address the most pervasive medical needs in the state and the nation. As of May 2017, our 3,386 alumni are serving patients in most Ohio counties, in every state and in nine countries. Forty-seven percent of Heritage College alumni practice in primary care specialties and nearly 60 percent practice in Ohio. Of our Class of 2016, 90 percent pursued graduate medical education training in areas with ongoing and projected physician workforce shortages. Our education programs include the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, dual degree programs, pre-medical school experiences, and continuing education for physicians and other health care professionals. Heritage College medical students begin their studies at our one of our three campuses, located in Athens, Dublin and Cleveland. During their first two years, they also see patients in early clinical experiences, support community health initiatives through volunteer outreach locally and abroad, and conduct research alongside faculty. Medical students carry out their third- and fourth-year clinical education in our 28 partnering community hospitals and other health care facilities spanning Ohio. In 1976, we welcomed 24 students to our Athens campus. We welcomed our largest class ever – 240 students, 10 times larger than our first entering class – when we opened our third campus in Cleveland in affiliation with Cleveland Clinic in 2015. In 2014, we opened our Dublin campus with generous support from the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation award, Vision 2020: Leading the Transformation of Primary Care in Ohio, and in partnership with OhioHealth. We also celebrated five years of the $105 million Osteopathic Heritage Foundation award. Every aspect of our college – every department, program and administrative unit – has transformed since the 2011 announcement of this gift. We increased scholarships for medical students, expanded and strengthened our Diabetes Institute and our Ohio Musculoskeletal and Neurological Institute, created an Office of Rural and Underserved Programs and an Office of Primary Care Research Initiatives, and invested in our research infrastructure and in many other strategies to address some of our most pressing health care challenges. We are ranked 14th nationally in Family Medicine in U.S. News and World Report 2018 Best Medical Schools. The Robert Graham Center ranks us in the top 11 percent of all medical schools nationally for producing primary care physicians.

: Celebrating Lawrence Witmer, Ph.D.’s 30-year anniversary with the Heritage College

On Sept. 1, 1995, Witmer began his career at Ohio University, pioneering new research techniques, inspiring countless students and building WitmerLab into a global leader in paleobiological research. The top image from 1995 shows Witmer posing with a T. rex skull on his lawn. At the time, his lab wasn’t yet ready. The bottom image shows Witmer in 2025 with the same T. rex, now painted and a centerpiece of his research space.
