Resharing cause I accidentally deleted it trying to fix my reel. Still learning how to schedule posts 😂
This is perfectly said and we to do not make hoagies here 😂 if you don’t want hoagies and only want the best think quality over quantity. We are not a hatchery, we breed to SOP and hatch for ourselves mostly. We share to help others when we can not because we have to. Its a lot of work to make the best! We do sell pet quality for much less but the higher prices in birds that may have the potential to be shown will be higher. You get what you pay for with this breed 😉
I wanted to address something with Spring being right around the corner and the “do you have chicks” messages rolling in. My chicks are not TSC prices (and there is nothing wrong with TSC if you want BYC). I get messages saying, “Your chicks are $50?! That’s way too much for a chick!” These are not the majority messages though.
While I don’t have to address the reasons for my prices, I feel like educating isn’t a bad thing, because there are a lot of new people in the hobby that don’t understand everything that goes into breeding.
1. I no longer sell day olds. My silkies and satins do not ship until 4 weeks+. These are birds with no DQs at the time of shipping. I want to make sure they are hardy and healthy before shipping. I also have to pay so much to grow them out that far.
2. I have spent thousands acquiring quality stock. I wasted so much in the beginning when I didn’t know what quality was and thousands more restarting with quality, building coops/pens, feed, meds, raising out stock, and establishing my own lines.
3. I have put in time researching genetics and learning SOP.
4. We spend hours daily taking care of these birds. Food, water, pens, grooming, etc.
5. Hatcheries are charging $20 for a hoagie looking straightrun silkie. You could spend $50 and get yourself a potential BQ/SQ bird. I can’t guarantee anything until adulthood, but I don’t breed hoagies.
6. I show my birds. I put in so much time and effort to condition them. I pay for travel, show fees, etc. to get an offspring from one of these birds for that little is amazing.
All this to say, if you want to breed toward SOP and better your birds, you will need to invest in your breeding. If it’s just a yard art bird, go for the cheaper birds. They are just as loveable. Some breeders charge more than me and some charge less. It’s all about what they value their stock at. No one has to buy from me or anyone else. Be kind if a bird/their price isn’t for you and find one that fits what you’re working towards. 🤍
