POLICY & THE PEOPLE — Week 6

Black youth are often outperforming in school but still earning less later in life. Higher grades aren’t translating into equal pay or opportunity — with race, class, and place continuing to shape outcomes.

This week, we’re breaking down the gap between education success and economic reality, alongside the government’s new Youth Strategy, which includes funding for youth hubs, paid work opportunities, and investment in local youth services.

These programmes exist, but access isn’t automatic. Knowing how to navigate them matters.

Because achievement alone doesn’t guarantee mobility — access to opportunity does.

Thanks to Roots Policy Consulting for the research backing this series.

What do you think? Are social mobility programmes actually reaching Black youth?

Today we honour the life and legacy of Jesse Jackson .

A civil rights leader. A Baptist minister. A movement builder. A presidential candidate who expanded the imagination of what was politically possible for Black America.

From marching alongside Martin Luther King Jr. to founding Operation PUSH and the Rainbow Coalition, Rev. Jackson spent decades advocating for racial justice, economic empowerment, voting rights, and global human rights.

He reminded us that civil rights and economic justice are inseparable.

He mobilised new voters. He built coalitions across race and class. He carried faith into public life.

And he taught us to “Keep hope alive.”

Not as a slogan, but as discipline. As strategy. As responsibility.

At Bounce Black, we honour leaders who widen the path, and we commit to continuing the work in our generation.

Rest in power, Rev. Jackson. We’ll take it from here 🕊️

While we’re celebrating love this weekend, we’re also excited about the arrival of the BLK app in the UK!

Why? Because Black singles are tired of being the educator on dates.

In this clip, Amber Cooper, Head of Brand at , shares why launching in the UK () felt urgent, and why so many Black singles are exhausted from constantly explaining their hair, their names, their culture, their history.

Dating shouldn’t feel like cultural translation. It should feel like being seen.

As BLK launches in the UK, the focus isn’t just connection. It’s also community, clarity, and creating spaces where Black people don’t have to codeswitch to be chosen.

Love that heals. Love that holds. Love that grows.

Happy Valentine’s Day from Bounce Black. ❤️

POLICY & THE PEOPLE — Week 5

Black women in England are three times more likely to die during pregnancy or the postnatal period.

This week, we’re breaking down health inequality, maternal care, and the policies, programmes, and community support systems working to change these outcomes.

Because information is survival.

Thank you to Roots Policy Consulting for the research behind this series.

Have you or someone you know experienced discrimination in maternity or healthcare? Share in the comments if you feel comfortable.

🚂 What can the Underground Railroad teach Black professionals today?

It wasn’t just a path to freedom. It was a masterclass in strategy, community, courage, and leadership. Today, those lessons still apply in our workplaces and careers.

From building networks that protect and uplift, to moving strategically, to leading with courage, there’s so much we can carry forward.

During Black History Month, we’re remembering the 1985 “Patty Wars” in Toronto, when Jamaican-Canadian bakers and community members successfully resisted a government attempt to rename Jamaican beef patties.

What may seem like a small story about food was actually about something bigger: cultural recognition, dignity, and the right for communities to define their own traditions.

Black history includes moments of everyday resistance. In workplaces, in schools, in policy decisions, and even in local bakeries.

The Jamaican patty remains a symbol of Caribbean-Canadian cultural contribution and community voice in Canada today.

What’s a cultural tradition you’ve seen protected by community action?

Black-led cultural spaces matter.

They are places where history is preserved, creativity is nurtured, and community is built; physically, not just digitally.

Across the diaspora, organisations have created spaces that hold our stories, support our artists, and bring people together to learn, connect, and imagine new futures.

From London to Toronto to New York, these cultural homes continue a long tradition of Black community building through place, memory, and creativity.

If you live near one of these spaces, consider visiting, attending an event, becoming a member, or supporting their work.

And if you know another Black led organisation with a physical cultural space, share it in the comments so we can keep building this list.

Save this post for later, and tell a friend to tell their cousin!

Black History Month didn’t happen by accident. It was built through advocacy, education, and community action.

🇺🇸 1926: Negro History Week began in the United States

🇨🇦 1995: Canada officially recognised Black History Month

🇬🇧 1987: The UK’s first Black History Month was celebrated

What started as a call to remember has grown into a global moment to honour Black history, resilience, and brilliance across generations.

We remember the origins. We continue the legacy.

POLICY & THE PEOPLE — Week 4

Black people in London are stopped and searched 5 times more often than White people, and force is used at 3 times the rate.

This week, we’re breaking down policing inequality, your rights, and the tools communities can use to demand accountability.

Because information is protection.

Thanks to Roots Policy Consulting for the research behind this series!

Dating shouldn’t feel like emotional overtime.

BLK has released a 7-step guide to help Black singles combat dating app fatigue this Valentine’s season — and we love how deeply it centres boundaries, clarity, and wellbeing.

You’re allowed to slow down.

You’re allowed to ask early questions.

You’re allowed to pause without disappearing.

Love that drains you isn’t love, it’s labour. And we’re not about that life.
