In recent months, our hearts have been heavy as we’ve witnessed tragic su***de losses affecting the Fort Payne community. These losses remind us why conversations, education, and preparedness around mental health matter so deeply. No family, school, or community should have to navigate grief and tragedy alone.

Our mission at the SAM Foundation has always been to help make our community more su***de-safe through training, education, and awareness.

Because of the needs we are seeing locally, we are honored to partner with Fort Payne City Schools to bring a nationally recognized Connect Postvention Training to Fort Payne.

This training will equip community leaders — educators, counselors, first responders, healthcare professionals, faith leaders, and more — with the tools to respond to su***de loss with compassion, coordination, and care while working together to prevent future tragedies.

Now, we are asking for your help.

We are currently seeking community sponsors to make this training possible and to support continued su***de prevention education for local students in the coming school year.

Together, we can help Fort Payne heal, support those who are grieving, and build a stronger, more connected safety net for the future. Because postvention is prevention!

This morning, our Executive Director, Maggie Bell, had the opportunity to speak at a special meeting focused on Crisis Support and Prevention in Huntsville.

We’re grateful for the invitation to share practical guidance and insights on how we can better support individuals experiencing a crisis.

It was also a wonderful time connecting with local organizations, building new community relationships, sharing resources, and scheduling future trainings to continue strengthening support across our region.

We’re thankful for every opportunity to collaborate and work together toward stronger, safer communities. 💜

💜Help Us Spread Hope — One Postcard at a Time 💜

Our message is simple: Keep Going — because your story isn’t over.

We recently created postcards featuring this reminder. We’re inviting our community to help us write encouraging, uplifting messages that will be sent to individuals who may need a reminder that they matter, they are seen, and their life has purpose.

Sometimes a few kind words can make a bigger difference than we realize.

If you’d like to be part of spreading hope and encouragement, join us in helping write postcards and share messages that remind others to keep going.💜

The SAM Foundation stands with families of su***de loss.

Our hearts are heavy as we grieve alongside a neighboring community following this tragic loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with this family, their friends, classmates, and all who are grieving.

Moments like this remind us how deeply su***de impacts an entire community. If you are struggling, please know you are not alone. If you are grieving, your pain matters and support is available.

If you or anyone you know would like to help us create su***de-safer communities or offer support to survivors of su***de loss, please message us directly today. Together, we can surround families with care, compassion, and hope.

OBITUARY: Lindsey Mae Swan, affectionately known to her loved ones as "Sweet Pea or Stitch," passed away on February 17, 2026, in her hometown of Huntsville, Alabama. Born on July 23, 2013, she was twelve years old. A vibrant spirit, Lindsey leaves behind a legacy of love, talent, and a profound message for her community.

Lindsey was a remarkable young girl who engaged with the world with enthusiasm and intelligence. A student at Mountain Gap Middle School, she was a dedicated member of the choir and a bright academic mind, evidenced by her invitation to join the Girls Engaged in Math and Science (GEMS) Team.

As a member of the Around The Curtain children's theater, she was diligently rehearsing for her role as a lioness in the upcoming production of *The Lion King*. Her energy extended to athletics as well, where she enjoyed playing volleyball, gymnastics, and dancing.

Beyond her activities, Lindsey is remembered for her character. She possessed a heart that was incredibly big, and she loved hard. She had a great sense of humor, a contagious laugh, and a mischievous twinkle in her eye when she was planning her next adventure. She found joy in the simple beauties of life, such as sunsets, stars, and the outdoors. She loved hiking, spending time at the beach, riding her scooter, gaming, and caring for animals.

Lindsey is survived by her loving mother, Brittany Booth and stepfather, Jason Booth; her sister, Lydia Laughery; and her brother, Parker Swan. She is also mourned by her grandparents, Kathy Eason and Kevin Blenman, Nick and Shellie Kioutas, and Ridge and Bebe Shariett. She leaves behind her aunts and uncles, Taylor Laughery and Matt Shamblin, Rhonda and Troy Moore, Allina Hannig, Cassandra Kioutas, Matt Sizemore, Nicko Kioutas, Jennifer and Wayne Lang, Ronnie and Beth Bunner, Steve Bunner; as well as her cousins, Aiden and Avery Brown, Alex Shaw, and Dixie Shamblin, Quinn Moore, Sydney and Payton Bunner, Veronica, Bryce and Aislynn Bunner. As well as other extended family. She was loved by so many family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her loving father, Joseph Laughery, and her grandparents, Ronald and Mary Bunner.

While we mourn the loss of such a beautiful soul, the family wishes to share a vital message based on Lindsey’s final journal entry. She wrote, "it’s too late for me... Please talk to someone even if they look and act OK... They might make it because of you."

There were signs, and there were moments where she expressed her struggle, yet silence prevailed. This tribute is not about blame; rather, it is about awareness and protecting the next child. If you hear a friend talking about hurting themselves, "self-canceling," or not wanting to be here anymore, please understand that this is not gossip, nor is it drama. It is a red flag, and it is a life on the line. If you see something, say something. Tell a parent, a teacher, a coach, or a counselor. You might worry about losing a friendship, but you will never regret saving a life. Silence can cost someone everything. We must remove the shame associated with su***de so that families can grieve out loud openly.

A funeral service will be held at Legacy Chapel Funeral Home & Crematory,16 Hughes Rd, Madison, AL 35758, on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at 2:00 PM. Following the service, there will be a celebration of life at Legacy Chapel Funeral Home & Crematory where friends are encouraged to stay and share stories.

A private burial will follow at Huntsville Memory Gardens, pallbearers will Matt Shamblin, Aiden Brown, Kevin Blenman, Mitchell Morrison, Matt Sizemore, and Nicko Kioutas.

May her spirit find eternal peace, and may her story save a life.

Sometimes it looks like getting out of bed.
Drinking water.
Taking a shower.
Answering one message.
Small steps are still progress.

Wherever you are in your journey, it counts. Be gentle with yourself — and extend that same grace to others.

This Giving Tuesday, You Can Help Save Lives💜

Today, we’re asking our community to stand with The SAM Foundation as we work to make our communities more su***de-safe through education, skills training, and survivor support.

We have several su***de prevention trainings scheduled in the coming weeks, and thanks to your support, we’ve already trained over 100 people this year with life-saving skills. Every training means more teachers, parents, coworkers, and friends who feel confident stepping in when it matters most.

We also believe local businesses can help meet local needs. When our community partners with us, we’re able to bring training and resources directly to the people who need them most — right here at home.

Every gift matters — even $10 makes a real difference. Your generosity helps us continue equipping everyday people with the tools to recognize warning signs, start conversations, and save lives.

Together, we can create a community of hope.💜
