One of the things I enjoy doing when I travel, especially solo, is a photo shoot.

I can be shy and an ambivert. If you’ve ever gone out with me, or we’ve even planned to go out, you may have realized this. I will have the best intentions at 9am and by 6pm, I’m at home, reading or relaxing or sleeping. And, if I do go out, I am often ready to leave a couple of hours after I get there. The peopling can be too much for me, sometimes.

So, what does this have to do with a photo shoot? Photo shoots get me out of my comfort zone. They make me show up differently (with some kind of makeup on, a new outfit, posing, smiling A LOT) and this puts me outside of my usual way of being.

This also creates a new neural pathway for me and the creation of new neural pathways is one way that we increase our longevity and mental well-being.

In my life, I have experienced depression at times and photo shoots help me to increase my confidence and to see myself differently. I have also come to realize that I enjoy playing in front of a camera!

These are some images from a photo shoot that I did in Istanbul with a wonderful photographer,

What do you do to move outside of your comfort zone?

Consistency is key, but it’s not always easy. However, the benefits of Pilates far outweigh the difficulties.

Pilates has helped me through tough times and I appreciate the progress I’ve made in terms of strength and flexibility.

I’m grateful for the ability to move and exercise, and I encourage others to do something that brings them joy.

Make your heart happy!

Traveling increases your brain’s neuroplasticity. Travel offers you something out of your regular routine which has the potential to enhance your brain’s ability to change. This is one of the ways growth occurs.

This year, I decided to do something different…and at the last minute. The weekend before Thanksgiving, I booked a solo trip to Portugal.

Are you wondering why? If you asked me, I might answer that I made an unpopular and bold decision to shift tradition and do something to take care of myself.

And I would also say because earlier that week a brotha who was a little younger than me transitioned. And although I knew it was coming, the way I met he and his wife was absolutely magical and they both are such special souls. And I would also say that the end of a life reminds us how temporary this sojourn is.

I would also tell you that I don’t need to be tempted to eat food that puts my digestive system in an uproar. Mac n cheese and the sweets are my nemesis…

Admittedly, for about 12 hours I wondered if this was the best decision…’cuz you know, if you mention it to the wrong person, they will let you know they think it is not a good idea based on their fears.

And baybaaayyyy, let me tell you, this has been, by far, one of the best and most liberating decisions I could have ever made for myself. I felt the energetic shift as soon as I hit the “buy now” button on Expedia.

I have met people that will hold a special place in my soul, had the most amazing experiences and there have been soooooo many confirmations that this was the right decision at the right time. I could not have planned a better vacation at a better time in my life. All I keep asking The Universe is “How can it get any better than this?” and “What else is possible?”

I encourage you to click the link in my bio to experience the joy and freedom travel can offer you and while you’re at it, increase your brain’s neuroplasticity.

Here’s a recap of my September…

The last month of summer was filled with joy and laughter and dancing and gardening…

1. The end of the summer used to be marked by the West Indian Day Parade in my hometown of Brooklyn. Now it is represented by the annual House in the Park festivities over Labor Day weekend.

2. It is always a joy to run into the people who helped shaped my Afrikans. The brotha was Menra’s second grade teacher, Mr. Coleman, who has such a gift with young black boys.
3. Of course, two of my most favorite humans (and couple) ever, and were at . They also need an award for rep pin HARD for the 50+ crew!

4. The Grown Ass Mamas from Tulum were in the house! Always a good time with my traveling crew!

5. I have been creating in the kitchen and freestyled this vegan Alfredo dish and it was 🔥🔥🔥!!!

6. I attended the lecture at the . They are DOPE!!! In eternal gratitude to this couple for expanding our ancestral memory through art.

7. Ran into and met there also…the conversation over cookies was icing on the cake.

8. I planted these seeds in early September and by the middle of the month, they had sprouted and are taking off. Gardening is a space of joy and I’m excited about all the greens that are growing…various types of kale, mustards and lettuce varieties. Holla if you want some…I love to share!

9. The tomatoes, peppers, sweet potato greens and okra are slowing down with the cooler temps. I didn’t buy any of these from the store all summer and I am grateful. I’m even more grateful for connecting with Mama Earth and experiencing the healing power of gardening. In spaces where I feel anxious or sad, I visit my happy place.

10. I also attended the , a wonderful event curated by . I ate a delicious oyster mushroom and vegan mac n cheese plate from . Be sure to follow !

Tell me about your September…what did you do the last month of summer?

Today is the 101st birthday of my father, Vere Ralston Crichlow.

He was born in St. Michael, Barbados and immigrated to the United States at the age of 12.

He lived in Harlem with my grandparents and after attending Stuyvesant HS, was drafted into the US Air Force.

He became a proud member of the Tuskegee Airmen and then a proud firefighter for the City of New York in the 1950s…in an era of racism and nepotism.

He moved our family to a house on Carroll St. in Brooklyn in the mid 60s. A resident across the street from our house used to throw hot water at my 10 year old brother and his friends as they played in the street.

He fought racism in our neighborhood of Crown Heights which was sometimes a tense existence between the communities of African people from throughout the diaspora and Hasidic Jews.

He fought racism within NYFD and helped establish Vulcan Hall, an organization for black and brown firefighters.

He taught me many things, including how to read, how to make smart investments with money and time, how to grow tomatoes and peppers, how to find a stud in a wall and how to make lasagna from scratch…including the garlic butter for the bread.

He also demonstrated how to stand up for myself. He was not a perfect man by any means, but he was the perfect father for me.

I am grateful we got to spend some time together in this lifetime.

Happy birthday, Daddy. May you continue to rise in eternal peace.
Love and miss you!!!

Health and wellness is my passion. I live it, I work in the field and I teach it. I also love food. Sometimes the two don’t go together.

I once attended a lecture where the speaker was talking about the challenges facing society around health issues such as diabetes and obesity. He said that campaigns to stop smoking were effective because there is no scientific need for people to smoke. It does more harm than anything, but people have to eat and getting them to change their diet is especially important and challenging at the same time. That statement stood out for me because there is so much truth in it. And the way this food situation is set up, it makes you a sugar and salt and carb addict!

I love to try different foods and I love to cook. As I mature mindfully, I am aware of how my body responds to foods like garlic (causes bloating), Brussel sprouts (bloating), gluten (bloating and eczema) and others. I don’t like the discomfort so I really try not to eat them and at times I’m more successful than others.

I also love to go to an outdoor farmers market or the weekly. Figuring out how much I really has been a challenge because i am so used to cooking for more than just me.

This week I freestyled these meals with groceries I picked up at local markets. I had a taste for pasta with Alfredo sauce but can’t eat either, so I made a vegan version using chicken pea pasta and plant based cream. I also made a sauce with basil and tomatoes from my garden. I tossed in steamed broccoli and voilà..this was my meal for the day! *chefs kiss

I also made a stir fry with lions mane mushrooms, broccoli, peppers and onion sautéed with coconut aminos and served over quinoa. I garnished it with a Japanese seasoning that had black and white sesame seeds and roasted nori. This was🔥🔥🔥!!! Next go round I’ll add fresh ginger and some scallions as a garnish.

I’m committed to feeling better (and if I can lose a few pounds in the process, I’ll be real happy). Both of these dishes satisfied my soul and my body was happy also!!! It’s a win-win all around!!!

What’s commitment are you willing to make to health and well being?

WOW!!! It’s the end of the first week of September and it’s the last quarter of the year!!!

A lot happened in 2023 so far and here’s how August went…

1. My garden grew well and the tomatoes were poppin last month.

2. My grown’ish Afrikans graced their mother with a visit…

3. My first (and only) watermelon for the season. It was delish, but then the caterpillars came and won the battle.

4 & 5. I was honored to be invited to birthday celebrations for and Tommie Williamson. Both celebrations were at places I hadn’t been to ( and ) and were filled with fun and laughter.

6. I went to the tour with some of my and and witnessed (and ) do the damn thang!

7. I haven’t stopped walking and I’ve enlisted two of my neighbors to join me on occasion.

8. I started adding some cardio back into my workout routine. Remember I said I gained a few pounds over the summer…well, I need to get them off. I do 20 minutes on the elliptical 4-5 days a week. I want to add some weights, but life is really busy, so I’m doing what I can’t for now. Slow and steady wins the race…

9. I ran into this beautiful soul, who was at the 2 year anniversary celebration of one of our favorite spots, .

10. One of the many hats I gratefully wear is that of a member of a research team at Emory University. This photo is of my colleagues and I at our Division’s annual research day.

There was so much more, but IG only gave me 10 photos…

How was your August?

I got on the scale yesterday…I’ve gained 5 lbs over the last month or so. I still go to Pilates every weekday and walk 3-4 times a week, but love will put some pounds on yo azz….

I’m on a mission to lose 10-15 pounds. Fifteen pounds would put me at fighting weight…lol.

Today’s lunch is inspired by my recent visit to the beach. Martha made the most delicious salads and added things I would never think to add like raw sweet potato cut very thin.

My salad is made with herbs, fruits and veggies from my garden*…

Red Romaine*
Green romaine*
Arugula
Cherry tomatoes*
Cucumbers
Okra*
African basil*
Parsley*
Sweet potato
Carrots
Sauerkraut

Dressing is avocado oil, fresh lemon juice, coconut aminos and coconut flavored vinegar.
