"Restoration is not synonymous with reconciliation. Reconciliation requires two or more parties to repair a relationship. Restoration is the restoring of the self, body, and the value of a person. Restoration does not require another party to be involved. A person has the ability to heal completely without relying on the repair of a relationship or an apology from the injurer." - Victoria Griffin, Trauma Therapist

Juneteenth: Freedom Day
Juneteenth represents more than just the freedom of the last remaining slaves. It represents the freedom of everyone. What started as a celebration of the release of the last remaining slaves opened up the fight for civil rights. A movement that continues to this day. Juneteenth is a reminder to us all that we deserve to be free, whether that be racially, s*xually, or any aspect of life. Equality is a constant battle that is carried on every day. Not only are we celebrating the liberation of African Americans, but we are celebrating all the obstacles that we have overcome. This year I will educate myself more about African American culture by exposing myself to more black authors.

Not all reactions to emotional injuries are obvious signs of hurt. Other signs or indicators of hurt are indifference, offensiveness, defensiveness, avoidance, shutting down, minimizing, opposition, and resistance. These same signs can also become barriers to intimacy and trust as well as a constant source of tension and conflict in your close relationships.

Think about some ways that you or a loved one reveal hurt that is not always obvious. Are these reactions to hurt problematic? If so, relational therapy (i.e. somatic experiencing, attachment based therapy, emotionally focused therapy, marriage and family therapy, EMDR) can be a helpful way to unlearn problematic reactions to hurt and develop healthier ways to respond to emotional injuries. Consider finding a therapist who specializes in relational therapy like we do here at Resiliency Counseling.

So much attention is often given to those in a mental crisis, little attention is given to those who care for those in a crisis. Resiliency Counseling believes in healing and supporting families as well as individuals.
