•Does your child struggle with long breaks from school? Transitions and changes in our routine can be hard! I always encourage parents to keep a physical calendar and use symbols (i.e. stickers) to let their child know their schedule. For example, put stickers of a school or bus on every Monday-Friday. You could put a birthday cake sticker on a Saturday when you are going to a celebration. You can use a doctor sticker or a bandaid if your child has a medical appointment scheduled. You can also mark off the days as you go. This can decrease anxiety and decrease undesired behaviors because your child knows what is coming next.
•Another thing I LOVE are social stories. As pictured, I have created and laminated picture symbols to explain spring break. Because it is laminated, I can use expo marker to fill in the days. Using social stories along with a calendar should greatly help with transitional times!
