When cold sores do appear, they tend to follow the same 5 stages, here's what to look out for:
1. Tingle Stage: If you feel a tingling or itching sensation around your mouth, it could be a sign of a cold sore coming on. Treating the cold sore at this stage can reduce its severity.
2. Blister Stage: A day or two later, fluid-filled blisters form at the site of the cold sore.
3. Ulcer/Weeping Stage: Around day 4 the blisters will break and weep fluid, leaving a red, open sore.
4. Crusting/Scab Stage: From days 5 to 8 the cold sore will scab as the ulcer has dried out. 5. Healing Stage: The cold sore will heal when the blister scabs over and slowly flakes away.
