Join me this evening @6:30pm in The RadiKal Readers Clubhouse (Facebook live as we celebrate Native American month by highlighting amazing authors and stories.

About the Book
A powerful imagining by two Native creators of a first encounter between two very different people that celebrates our ability to acknowledge difference and find common ground--with art by New York Times bestselling illustrator and Caldecott Medalist Michaela Goade

Based on the real journal kept by French explorer Jacques Cartier in 1534, Encounter imagines a first meeting between a French sailor and a Stadaconan fisher. As they navigate their differences, the wise animals around them note their similarities, illuminating common ground.

This extraordinary imagining by Brittany Luby, Professor of Indigenous History, is paired with stunning art by Michaela Goade, winner of 2018 American Indian Youth Literature Best Picture Book Award. Encounter is a luminous telling from two Indigenous creators that invites readers to reckon with the past, and to welcome, together, a future that is yet unchartered.(amazon,)

Happy National Literacy Day!

NATIONAL FAMILY LITERACY DAY
Families gather around to observe National Family Literacy Day on November 1st. Families who read together succeed together.

There are more reasons than ever before for families to read aloud to their children from a young age. Besides the fact that reading creates quiet, quality
family time, it develops early vocabulary skills. If that wasn't enough to get a family reading together, check out these reasons:

*Expands their attention span and yours. Read chapter books even to your youngest child. They may drift off to sleep, but they are listening and their attention span will lengthen.

*It's free. Books can be checked out from the library.

*You can read well above a child's level, and they will still listen and comprehend.

*Improve listening skills. See above.

*It's portable. Reading doesn't require batteries. Except at night.

*Reading is a tool that can never be unlearned. Once a child learns to read, they never stop. You'll know because you'll have to stop spelling certain words to your spouse.

*It improves imagination and creativity.

History of Helping Mamas

Helping Mamas was founded by a social worker who saw a gap in services.

There was no coordinated effort to collect and distribute essential baby items or period products to women and children in need. After watching moms having to use plastic grocery bags for diapers or washout and reuse disposable diapers, she knew something needed to be done. There are no public assistance programs to provide for diapers or period products. Parents were missing work because of diaper need, babies were experiencing severe diaper rash infections and teen girls were missing a week of school a month because of a lack of period products.

Combining her passion for motherhood and social work, Jamie Lackey founded Helping Mamas out of her garage. Collecting baby supplies from friends and family members and then distributing them to social workers serving women and children. By 2018, Helping Mamas had grown into a 9,000 square foot building where we operate today.

Serving nearly 60,000 children a year and distributing 2 million essential items to the community. Helping Mamas has grown to fight diaper need and period poverty throughout the state of Georgia and in Knoxville, TN.

The Gala held by the County Public Library last evening was awe-inspiring. I had the opportunity to meet a group of exceptional individuals who are actively engaged in making significant contributions to the local community. I have to say that the highlight of the event for me was meeting the guest speaker Malcolm Mitchell, the author of two of my favorite books, The Magician's Hat and My Favorite Book . Dr. Mitchell is a former Georgia bulldog football player and Super Bowl champion and is currently the founder of the
A non-profit dedicated to providing free virtual reading challenges, delivering impactful school events, and introducing book ownership to inspire kids to read.
I am so proud of this extraordinary young king.

Great time hanging out with the Sensational Seniors at the Fall into wellness event. The energy was amazing. The attendees were excited to hear about all the wonderful programs and resources we have at the Gwinnett County Public Library. I may have a few mentors for our Career Online Hifh School and New Start Entrepreneurial programs. Great things are happening.
