When I was first introduced to this song in undergrad, I could never play this song while studying. Between the infectious groove of this song and my ADHD, absolutely nothing was getting done when this song was on.

With that said, it’s ok to play your music, but ensure it’s neutral enough to maintain or strengthen your focus on what needs to be done.

We are all human.

Let me say that again: WE ARE ALL HUMAN

Sometimes life comes at us too fast and it’s ok to say that we can’t handle it all, especially when you have ADHD and still have to find a way to make it all happen. It’s ok to just take a minute to find that calming place and breathe so that you can re-center yourself to get through that task, that workout, that day, that week.

And there’s absolutely NO PROBLEM with asking for it, regardless of what people will think.

Even with therapy and medication, your ADHD child won’t always be their best selves. In those gaps, it’s important that you find ways to channel their impulses into something “productive”.

The key to this is understand what drives them in order to do so.

Remember, you’re not alone in this and I’m here to help.

I will be honest: I had a very fortunate upbringing in the church. Despite my ADHD challenges, the church now known as Brookins-Kirkland AME had the right village to make sure I was going to be just fine (just in case you’re wondering, that’s me at the top left posing for the church photo of the children’s choir Buds of Promise when I was 8 years old). Also, for a young mom like mine who spent a lot of time working, having that village was extremely comforting and gave her a lot of peace of mind.

Unfortunately, for a lot of children, especially black children, my experience is more of the exception than the norm. In most churches, kids like me were just considered bad or, in some cases, children with the devil in them that needed to be compelled or delivered. What I have learned in life of the faith is that prayer only does so much. James 2:26 says “…faith without works is dead” and I am so thankful for the village of my childhood church - from sitting down with me to ask me about my day, to my choir directors, to the surrogate moms in the Women’s Missionary Society, to Mrs. Fields keeping me fed after church so I wouldn’t look too skinny - who kept me grounded and put in the work behind the faith to ensure my marinade was solid.

I will speak on this more in a future post, but wanted to get that from my spirit into public view. If you have ADHD and grew up in the church, what was your experience? If you have a child with ADHD, what’s their current experience like? Is it one that makes you proud of being a member?

If you have an active child with ADHD, consider martial arts as a way to get their energy out.
The discipline demands that you work on staying focused on the task at hand, which develops their concentration skills. It also provides physical benefits such as strength and endurance while promoting patience, self-control, and respect for others. It also teaches social skills such as teamwork and how to communicate.
If you have a child that could benefit from these skills, definitely consider martial arts in their after school activities.

Please like and share this post if you know someone who could benefit from this information.

I’ve decided it’s time to raise my voice and become an advocate for those with ADHD. There is an entire community of people of color-adults included–who need their stories to be magnified. Let’s make this journey together and break stereotypes, one step at a time.

I took myself off of ADHD meds after elementary school, and to say middle school was a struggle academically is an understatement. When I started high school, my parents banned me from watching tv during the week to keep me focused on my homework. It started with listening to Stevie, and it eventually evolved over the years into , , and to name a few. What started as a “punishment” eventually became the stopgap to help keep me focused enough (keyword: enough) to handle my business academically. I took that habit into college, grad school, work assignments, and studying for my certifications. All of this while NOT being medicated for ADHD. I don’t live life in regret, but I definitely wonder what I could have accomplished if I had the meds to be my best me?!?!

So what about jazz music (which includes contemporary, traditional, fusion, soul jazz, etc) is a benefit for children or adults with ADHD?

1. It increases the brain’s ability to process and retain information.
2. It reduces stress and anxiety (more on that in a later post)

So whether it’s for you or for your child, give jazz music a try and see if it helps, even if you don’t have ADHD.

I have tagged some of the artists you should check out that have produced some of the good music that helped me accomplish the aforementioned goals mentioned above over the last 25+ years (if you don’t already know them). You will thank me later!
