Breast storage capacity is the amount of milk a woman can hold in her breast when the breast is full. It is not related to breast size. Women with large and small breast can have the same storage capacity. It all depends on the amount of glandular tissue and ducts present in the breast. Women with smaller storage capacities will have to pump and breastfeed their babies more often. Women with larger storage capacities may be able to feed and pump less frequently after establishing their milk supply.

Did you know that your breast size DOES NOT determine if you can breastfeed? Your breast are made up of glandular tissue and fat. The amount of fat in your breast determines your breast size. The glandular tissue in your breast is responsible for milk production. Breast size does not determine how much glandular tissue you have. Small breast and large breast can have the same amount of glandular tissue.

Let’s talk breastfeeding positions. There are so many positions you can try. As you try new positions, there are a few key things I want you to keep in mind.

Breastfeeding should be comfortable for you and your baby. Use pillows and cushions to support your back and arms. Nursing pillows can be used to support your baby, but standard pillows work fine as well. Sometimes a standard pillow is easier to use in the first few days because you can mold them into the shape and height you need.

Bring your baby to your breast, not your breast to your baby. Position your baby so their ear, shoulder, and hips are aligned. Your baby should be facing you. This means their stomach is facing you and you can’t read the front of their onesie. Keep your baby close to you to reduce strain on your ni**le.

If you are struggling with positioning your baby at your breast, please reach out to a lactation specialist for help. LEIA Maternal Health would love to support you!

Hey moms! Breastfeeding is ALL about supply and demand. I tell moms to think of breastfeeding like a drive thru. You have to place an order to pick up your food. Every time you remove milk from your breast it places an order for more milk. Amazing right!

Often times moms will tell me they wait to feed or pump because they are able to remove more milk from their breast. Don't be tricked! It appears that you are getting more milk, but a mom that removes milk more frequently will have more milk over a 24 hr period.

When we allow milk to just sit in our breast it signals to our bodies that we are making more milk than we need. This causes milk production to cut back. Think about it. When we are ready to start the process of weaning, we decrease the number of times we feed or remove milk which causes our milk supply to cut back.

Are bodies are amazing right! Tell me your thoughts.
