L'Arche Atlanta

We are people, with and without developmental disabilities, sharing life in communities of faith.

L'Arche Atlanta is an Atlanta-based nonprofit that supports adults with intellectual and development disabilities (IDD). In the L'Arche Atlanta community, people with IDD (whom we call Core Members) are not clients, patients, or recipients of services. Instead, they are friends, teachers, and companions, who, through daily acts of care, trust, and friendship, develop into ambassadors of compassion

and leaders for social change. L'Arche Atlanta launched its first house in 2012 in the Oakhurst neighborhood of Decatur and is now one of over 150 global communities in the International Federation of L'Arche. L'Arche was founded in 1964 as a response to the mass institutionalization of people with intellectual disabilities and has since spread to over 140 communities in 35 countries. For over 50 years, L’Arche has brought about a revolution in quality of life for people who have developmental disabilities.

With the launch of "We’re Here: Then, Now, Always," a national campaign by the NACDD, we join communities from across the country in celebrating the lives and contributions of people with I/DD. As Jill Jacobs reminds us, "All of us have a responsibility to keep learning, engaging, and building communities where everyone belongs—every day of the year." We are excited to collaborate with and for an hour long "Serenity Within" Yoga Nidra class at 5:45pm, March 19. Yoga Nidra is a guided meditation practiced while resting comfortably. Participants may lie down on a mat, sit in a chair, or remain in a wheelchair. There are no physical poses to master and no experience required. Friendly reminder to join this Wednesday, January 28th, at the GA Capitol for COMP/NOW Waivers Advocacy Day. NOW more than ever our state legislators need to hear how necessary and impactful these Medicaid waivers are for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Currently there are 7,800 folks waiting for a waiver!

We will gather in the morning at Central Pres. Church for training and then head to the Capitol for an opportunity to talk with your state rep.

In the L'Arche Atlanta community, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (who we call core members) are not clients, patients, or recipients of services. We are different ages, come from different home towns, have different family backgrounds and faith traditions but share a desire to live a full life, be loved as we are, and, by sharing our gifts, to blossom into our most authentic selves.
