New research is helping strengthen what the brain injury community has known for years: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a chronic condition — not a one-time event. 🧠✨
The National Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) recently released Examining Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) as a Chronic Condition, a report based on a workshop featuring leading experts in brain injury research and care. Their findings reinforce the long-term, evolving nature of TBI and the importance of treating it like other chronic health conditions.
Here are a few key takeaways:
🔹 TBI often causes long-term changes in thinking, emotions, and physical function — aligning with what defines a chronic health condition.
🔹 Persistent symptoms are common. Nearly half of individuals experience ongoing changes, and chronic TBI may impact up to 18% of U.S. adults.
🔹 Recognizing TBI as a chronic condition matters. This classification could expand insurance coverage, improve access to neurologically informed care, and help create stronger support systems for patients and families.
🔹 Experts emphasize that more work is needed so healthcare providers, insurers, and policymakers treat TBI with the same long-term lens as other chronic conditions.
For many families— including those served by Andee’s Army—this research validates lived experience: recovery doesn’t follow a straight line, and long-term support is essential. 💛
