Andee's Army

Andee's Army Funding the recovery and rehabilitation of children who have sustained brain and spinal injuries.

Andee's Army provides financial assistance to families of children and adolescents who are receiving medical treatment and care for brain injuries and other neurological injuries and conditions including spinal cord injuries and Multiple Sclerosis. Andee’s Army is a non-profit organization that was formed in 2011 by friends of the Poulos family, after their daughter Andee fell victim to a circulatory problem in her brain, an extremely rare condition called Ateriovenous Malformation (AVM). After life-saving surgery in January 2011, Andee’s recovery is under way and she returned to high school in the fall of 2013.

Myth!
Many brain injuries—especially concussions—don’t show up on imaging. That doesn’t make the symptoms any less real or serious. Trust your body, advocate for your care, and always follow up with a medical professional. 🧠💛

New research is helping strengthen what the brain injury community has known for years: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a chronic condition — not a one-time event. 🧠✨

The National Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) recently released Examining Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) as a Chronic Condition, a report based on a workshop featuring leading experts in brain injury research and care. Their findings reinforce the long-term, evolving nature of TBI and the importance of treating it like other chronic health conditions.

Here are a few key takeaways:

🔹 TBI often causes long-term changes in thinking, emotions, and physical function — aligning with what defines a chronic health condition.
🔹 Persistent symptoms are common. Nearly half of individuals experience ongoing changes, and chronic TBI may impact up to 18% of U.S. adults.
🔹 Recognizing TBI as a chronic condition matters. This classification could expand insurance coverage, improve access to neurologically informed care, and help create stronger support systems for patients and families.
🔹 Experts emphasize that more work is needed so healthcare providers, insurers, and policymakers treat TBI with the same long-term lens as other chronic conditions.

For many families— including those served by Andee’s Army—this research validates lived experience: recovery doesn’t follow a straight line, and long-term support is essential. 💛
