Weather Pre-Alert for Sunday. Things are starting to shape up for a day of severe weather on Sunday for North Georgia. Below are the NWS Storm Prediction Center's outlook for Sunday as of early this morning. Also I've included the forecasted Significant Tornado Parameter (STP) plot for Sunday at 5pm. The actual STP value for the Atlanta Metro area is around 5. Values greater than 1 are indicative of increased potential of significant tornadoes. The scale goes from 1-10. This is still 2 days out, so things can still change, but trends are not in our favor at the moment.

Would love to see the after action report on this search.

More than a dozen agencies from around Eastern North Carolina provided resources to help aid in the search for three-year old Casey Hathaway over the course of four days.

Let me paint a picture for you. Imagine yourself lost or injured out in the woods, and no one knows where you are and you have no cell coverage. Imagine yourself lying on the ground, praying that someone finds you in time. While your thinking this, you hear a little bell in the distance, quickly followed with leaves crunching as something quickly approaches your location. Your pretty sure it’s not a person, but some animal (but the bell sound confuses you). All of a sudden you see a dog run right up to you, look you in the face and quickly dart back the way it came. While your trying to process this the dog returns, does the same thing and leaves again. However this time you hear the dog bark in the distance. Finally a third time the dog returns and just stands next to you, staring off in the direction it came from. You then notice the harness on the dog that says “Search & Rescue”. You overjoyed with being found. A few minutes later, humans crest the hill and once the dog knows its handler sees you, darts back for praise and their toy. Today the GATC SAR team had the pleasure to attend a training event of the ATSAR K-9 SAR team. I was that simulated victim, and my rescuer was “Riley”. The photos taken were from me as I was lying prone on the ground. An amazing day with dedicated folks. Thanks for the experience.

GATC Search & Rescue

The Georgia Appalachian Trail Club (GATC) Search & Rescue team is a group of club members who have chosen to learn and practice the art of Wilderness Search & Rescue. Our members have varied backgrounds, some ex-military, some have been members of other volunteer SAR teams and some with no prior experience before joining the team. The one thing that binds the group is a willingness to learn the hard skills in SAR and be willing to help those in need.

Our team never self deploys, meaning we don’t just show up at a search. We only respond after being asked by the authority having jurisdiction, which is normally a local Sheriff or Fire Department.

Some of our member are NASAR SARTECH II certified and some of our team have completed formal multi-day training in managing the lost person incident (For us, that primarily means we understand the search process and tasking often given to ground teams). Our team does regular field training to practice skills such as Land Navigation (Day & Night), Wilderness First Aid, Search Tactics, Field Communications, Survival Skills to name a few.

Our team also provides training within the GATC and are more than willing to do joint training with other teams (both conducting the class to simply participating as a group as part of another teams training event). We have a special love for Land Navigation :-)
